Obviously, it depends, but just curious. I think I'm using mine too long, out of cheapness, when I put a new one in it cuts a lot better.

Typically I replace my files when they start to reflect light. This has always been a good indicator for me. I use a bar mounted jig most of the time and just rotate the file 90 degrees after each sharpening.

When you have to force the thing to sharpen... It should only take light pressure to file. Waitin' till it is shiny is too long. JMHO:popcorn:

Yep, and the German made Husky files we get here are much better than the Stihl ones (much more "bite")......:blob2: :blob2:

...toss them as soon as they appears to be less efficient - they are cheap....

Something that has helped extend the life of my files, is to take a sheet of
paper and roll it up tite & tape it in 3-4 places, to use as a sleeve when in the saw box.

About 4-5" with the tang is the best nozzle cleaner I've found for the mig gun.

Keeping the files away form each other and othr metal objects is key. The longevity of a file depends on how bad the chain is. Sometimes i can et a whole chain out of one file. Sometimes if it is rocked out or metaled out real bad I cna only get maybe ONE side of the chain with a file. I change them out as soon as they become difficult to get a good bite with. Like was said above they are cheap enough to buy, alot cheaper than trying to get an extra tooth or two out of a dull file which in the end costs time. My time is more valuable than a $1-$2 file.

files----D O N T drag the files backward--against the steel---that flattens the file face---the "ridge" top--and thats why the file turns "shiny"---and becomes DULL---same thing with a hand hacksaw--dont drag back with it on the steel--dulls blades quick

to store your files in the toolbox, take 5/16" ID rubber fuel line (auto parts store) and cut into 12" lengths, bundle together about 4 - 6 of them and wrap with tape. insert your round files.....Presto....file protection, organization and longer file life.

I use drinking straws taped at the ends. Works pretty slick!

I also prefer the Pferd files.

RE:round files

I have used many different brands and have finally settled on Vallorbe, I have gone through 1 chain in 10 days firewood cutting and used the 1 file which will be good for another 1/2 chain or more ( chain is 124 drive links 404 ) I also keep the files in a protective sheath.

Wow, more than one file for one sharpening? I am just converting from dremels, but I had no idea I would need to go through so many round files that quickly.
I knew the grinding stones wore quickly, but it looks like I needed to order many more files than I just did. Does it help to clean them of metal, and if so how would you do that? Thanks.

buy a steel brush (file brush)to clean the files with and try to get the chain as dry and free from oil and grit, it will be easier to file and the files last longer ,,,

I am sure I could get mor life out of them but they are cheap and why work so hard to sharpena chain? I "tap them out" on the vice frequently, and sometimes wipe them on my pant leg, be careful small metal shavings in your skin are very annoying especially when sweating!

I use Stihl files for Stihl chain and Total files for all other chains, I think the Pferd files suck compared to these two.

Why not just keep the files in the box they come in instead of all these fancy straw and fuel line holders?

Yes they come in a protective plastic sheath, that's where i keep mine, and i don't work hard to file the chain, when it's had it out it goes. I and most firewood cutters i know will not use a Stihl file as we reckon soft files for soft chain - I hear too many complaints about them and have compared them to the files i am now using and there is no comparison. We could go on all day here on this subject.

Like I said before. I agree 100% with you. I only use Stihl files on Stihl chain. Have you tries the Total files?
