I have found a very large black cherry tree that blew over on a property that I can have the tree (uprooted not snapped). I am guessin the tree to be 20 inches a cross and probablly 3 or 4 good 9 ft logs. problem is the tree is 20 miles from home and id have to load my Kubota on the trailer go to the tree and unload. Then load the tree on trailer. Drive the trailer home and unload the tree and then turn around and go back and get the Kubota. I dont have a sale for the tree yet either. How much is the value of this tree (roughly)?
How would you cut this tree. I have a LT 15 bandmill. Would you box the heart or flat saw it for wide cherry boards?

It is in this situation that a CS mill is very useful to break up the log into 2 -3 - 4" thick slabs and then bring it back to resaw with the bandmill.

I have a simple heavy duty boat wench mounted to my trailer with a ramp and peavy I could snatch it in under 10min's....

You need to work on your log transportation scheme. A winch for your trailer might be in order.

smokinj show us how your set up works!!

Usually if I don't know for sure (and immediately) that I want a log I just give up on it and go on to the next one. But I'd drive 20 miles to get a really nice (likely to be straight and clear) cherry tree if it was free.

Trust me that idea is in there. I have a come along and a 2500 lb atv winch that I was never impressed by when it was on my atv. Guess I am still going back to how much work is this tree worth? Just found out I have to pay a 10.00 wood cutting permit also. Just policy. I am going to look for more trees as soon as I get boundry lines.

Thas easy enough..If you never done it before 30min tops just make sure you have a ramp to slide on and a peavy to keep it stright easy peasy! After doing it once yoo will want to do more that way even if your not milling. My neighbor is 74 and done a big cherry tree why I was not home to surprise me....And he did, and he just laugh....

I have a boat winch which is the easy way. I also have a cumberlong which is the cheap way. I back my trailer right up to the log and pull them with the winch or cumberlong. I use pipes and rounds of wood to help them move. I use a few 3inch planks of white oak run them into the trailer. I don't go to far for small logs. If the tree is up hill you can use planks to roll the to the log right in the trailer.

Best of luck.

Winch it or forget it

I would invest in a winch. I did about four years ago, when a storm created a lot of business for me. In that case, I made my money back from the cost of the winch in less than a week, but that was a unique situation. The winch still makes me money though.

steel deck on the tilt trailer helps the 5000 # waren slip em on . gotta a 500 # boom on the truck to load the little stuff . Mike can usually load faster than i can cut.makes for fun not so much work going on 70 ya know. johnt
