How to kill a Cat!

A cat muffler of coarse. I just ordered my new husky 359 and was wondering just how hard it would be to get rid of the catalytic crap inside the muffler. Do you have to rip the two halves apart or can you just gut the muffler as is? I don't like the idea of my new baby running hot as hell and would like to get rid of that nasty little bottle neck.

The muffler is brazed together. You would need a brazing furnance to disassemble the muffler body. Most folks seem to drill a hole through the catalyst and througth the front of the muffler. A possible choice for you if you are wanting to eliminate the heat retaining characteristic of the cat would be to purchase a non-cataylst muffler for a pre-E Tech 359 or 357XP.
These mufflers do have an internal baffle in them. You might find a used muffler or you can get them new from Husky. They sell in the $40 to $50 price range.

Don't know if I wan't to order a new non E-tech muffler just yet. When I can mod the original. What is the catalyst material like? Is it a ceramic honey comb like a cars cat or something different? I keep hearing people refer to a plate that they drill through. I know that with my jeep when the cat started to rattle I just took it off a smashed all the ceramic honey comb junk out with a hammer and pipe.:hmm3grin2orange: With the saw I would like to weld a 1/2" pipe on the bar side of the muffler and maybe one on the other side also. So that's why I'm on how to get rid of the junk inside the muffler.

It is a coated metal.

the coating will create heat unless removed.
you can remove the pipe to the original outlet or put in another behing the waffle plate. check it out maybe you will have the best idea.

Hmmm What would happen if I used a map gas torch to heat the inside of the muffler cherry hot for a while what would that do?:stupid: Sorry for the stupid questions. I'm so excited to get the saw that I'm trying to get a game plane together as far as what to do to the muffler. Anyone ever try cutting a slot across the front of the muffler like a louver or something? Pleas be patient this is my first new saw and I can't wait for UPS!

Hi. The inlet opening on the muffler is approx. 1 3/16" wide X 11/16" height. You might have a hard time gaining access with your torch. You would at least end up with a hot muffler. Some guys have used an ox/acetylene setup to burn some of the waffle away. It has also been previously stated that the catalyst coating is nothing that you would want to ingest/breath!

As far as outlet shape goes, that is limited only by your imagination and mechanical skills. I would add to that to make sure you do not have any interference with any part or function on your new saw. Holding a muffler in your hand is alot different that when it is attached to your saw. Will do Urbicide Will do. I don't know what affect a map gas hand torch will have but it's gets pretty darn hot. Hoping to burn or obliterate that nasty EPA waffle and save some years on my poor 359.:biggrinbounce2:

That 359 looks real nice! I like nice clean factory lookin mods like that. Don't know if I wan to go that route or place a tube off one or both sides.

What do you all think would happen if one were to cut a slot across the muffler like in the pic and hammer that lower half of the cut in to make a louver like opening? I see allot of the same stuff with mufflers and would like to do something different't.

If you are going to put in a screen then it might be tuff but otherwise as log as you keep the modded exhause hole with in i think its 85% of the inlet port hole size then I'm sure it would work. The big reason i put the exhaust holes where i did is because #1 i can add a screen easy and #2 the hole is in a direct shot out of the head pointed down. I own a welding shop so all the fancy pipes and do-dads i could of done but again i wanted a direct shot with the exhaust out the muffler with out a lot of turbulance within the muffler.
