So ive been getting pretty busy lately with some very small logging jobs and some tree removals and finally got into a good sized drop. Im no pro but have been cutting along time and just wanted some input. How does my stump look? it was 28 inches and is the first tree ive had to work from both sides. I was running a 24 inch bar which is usually more than enough around here. Any input good or bad would be appreciated. just looking to learn as much as i can, thanks

dude, that's respectable :cool2:

The stump looks great----------but what does the house look like?? Nice:hmm3grin2orange:

haha well thats a whole other story... no the drop went great, right where it was aimed. I had my three point winch hooked about 25 feet up just to be sure but part way into the cut it started to lean where i was aiming anyways.

Hinge looks ok.
Don''t see evidence of wedging.
What'd it look like standing ? Species ?

it was a white pine, 60-80 feet maybe pretty straight with a little lean left towards there flower bed but it stayed true the the hinge and avoided it. I did put two wedges in the back but never had to pound them, it lifted in the right direction in a hurry.

Ok, +1 on the wedges.
no need to ask about thumbs and looking up, right ?
and thanks for extra pictures.

no i spent a lot of time looking up, this is the largest tree ive dropped and was well within striking distance of the house so i took my time.

the part that made me the most causious was the tree was hit by lightning, thats the whole reason i took it down. I didnt know just how bad of shape the tree was because most of the bark stayed. You could see one large crack in it though. I bucked it to 8"6" logs for my neighbor, he mills wood. when we skidded the log to the trailer and unhooked the chocker from the log that was say 17 feet up the tree it actually fell apart.Still managed some nice saw logs out of it though, not a complete waste.

Now you just have to cut it all from the same side of the tree.

yeah i totally agree, but wasnt about to "practice" on a tree that could come into contact with there house. Im mainly a firewood guy and dont have many trees that large to work with. I tend to cut lots of stuff in the 18 inch range, easier for me to handle for firewood than monsters. If i keep getting more of these removals though i really look forward to cutting some bigger trees. I will say the tree seemed much easier to work with than a smaller one. Much more wood to work with,a lot more room to put wedges in and just seemed easier to aim with the extra room for some holding wood.
