Was looking at a few used cylinders at a Husky dealer this afternoon and found a couple 55 cylinders. There was a couple with the compression release (only available on the 55, not on the rancher). I saw some with closed ports and some with open. What would I be better with? I plan on cleaning the ports up a little and modding the muffler to see if I can get it to scream more than my stocker.. Any thoughts or suggestions? Any 55 experts here?

Thanks
Steve

I am far from an expert on this (or anything else), but I think the best you could do might be finding a Jonsered 2055 engine. Bore and stroke is the same, and the models were closely related.
You may have to change the carb (and maybe more) also to take advantage of it though, and I am not positive that it would work at all....

Usually,a closed port is better for performance. But on 55 and Rancher ,they are open.I guess the ones you saw with closed transfer were maybe from a 254,unless there is a 55 w/closed that i dont know of.You ll be better with a Rancher vs 55 because you get 53cc instead of 51.the 55 is 45 x 32 mm and the Rancher is 46 x 32 mm.The 2055 got also 46 x 32mm,but i cant tell if she had same bolt cyl pattern than Husky.

The 154/254/254xp engines has a longer 34 mm stroke, and will not fit on the 55, 2054 or 2055.

All the manuals for the 55 that I have looked into list the bore as 46 mm, regardless if it is a Ranger or not. I know that Dozerdan once wrote on another forum/site that thare was an EPA version of the 55 with 45 mm bore, but I have seen no evidence of it, and it would effectively have made the saw into a model 51......

Sawtroll,in the husky spec sheet,there is a 55 with 45 mm bore.

when I was searching across the 55 and 55 rancher, I found some interesting thoughts in some of the threads. I guess the 55 non rancher was actually a 51cc (45mm bore) vs the 55R at 53cc (46mm bore) I'll try to dig up the threads....

I am sure that is not the case.
If the 45 mm version exist, it is not that simple.

Over here we have never had the 55 Rancher, just the 55 - and it has been listed with 46 mm bore/32 mm stroke and 53.2 cc in all the spec sheets, catalogs and manuals that I have seen.
The same is the case in the US listings and manuals that I have seen, regarding both the 55 Rancher and non-Rancher.
