A local jewelry box/cabinet maker....calls. He wants what we call WRC and others call juniper...and the state calls Ut. Mt. Juniper...cut to 3/8" thick boards, random length and width.

All rough cut, for humidor's. Why that type of wood??
He gives them as gifts containing expensive cigars.

Is there something special about this type of wood for that purpose?

Been reading up on it, it is cheaper than Spanish Cedar or Honduran Mahogany.

I have cut a lot of it for "cedar chests" and jewelry boxes. Also small shingle sizes for soaking then BBQ-ing of fish. I have not tried it yet.

I know nothing of cigars, but would they not absorb the natural woods oils and smells???

Any thoughts???

WRC & ERC are acceptable substitutes for Spanish cedar. I built about 75 custom himidors during the "heyday" and used erc. I sold all but one & still keep my cigars in it. The erc has not affected the flavor(to me) in any adverse way & the erc smell in my 15 year old humidor is just about gone.

The main reason for any kind of cedar is to discourage bugs, but they come pre-wrapped in all cigars and will hatch out if the temp gets too high. It's a good thing they only bore a tiny hole on the way out which doesn't hurt the smoke at all.

I did not know that, thank you Sir.

i believe WRC is less "potent" than ERC. if youre ever seen ERC after it has sat the red area will develop a fuzzy crystal like coating. sat it off and renew the smell. i think this will leech into tobbacco making it bitter.

Spanish Cedar has all of the bug-resistant qualities of Aromatic Cedar, without the funny smell. It's also the cedar more easily found in Central America and other regions where cigar tobacco is grown - so it's more economical for cigar companies to come by.
