So gents,

ive been away from this site pretty much, "thanks" to huge amount of daily saw toying, but i havent forgotten you.

All my previous saws are in state that they were i havent rellay done much saw works at home, but as the fall arrives, ill have plenty more time to work with 357,444,026,266,260,etc etc...

Yet, ive hauled some broken saws home, and one of em is this Husqvarna 246 that i liked to get, as i have only seen em, never owned nor used one. The one i have is running, and its only broken part is the starter spring. But i think that tomorrow i might find a suitable.

I think ill be doing pressure test, doing general cleaning, washing the carb and fitting a carb kit, removing the gasket under the cylinder, and gutting the muffler, and if i have, ill put in a new 8 tooth chain sprocket in as well.

But ive been thinking of opening (widening, i am not experienced yet with timing mods) the ports a Bit, hopefully i wont ruin the damn thing, as i just went a ruined one 55, when i took "one more stroke with grinder" off the intake, and then the pistonrings opened to the intake...luckily i have spare jugs for it, phiuh...

I am very very interested to compare my 242 and 242xp against the 246 since ive heard that 246, although lacks the high end power peak, has broader power range and maybe even more torque who knows, maybe you, fellas ?

Ill post a few pics tomorrow, ok ? I know the 246 is nothing, in eyes of many, but.....

Hey Finn, howzit going? I would look forward to pictures as you look into this new project. A dealer south of me has a cherry 246 that he mildly ported and did a muffler mod on. It is a little screamer. Keep us in the loop, good to see you back here. Russ

I think that ive been up to my throat, of saws for a while, but now when the business is getting more quiet and slow, i might have passion to rebuild etc, my own wrecks :msp_sneaky:

Its sad that i lost the opportunity to machine cylinders, to increase compression but we´ll see if some other lathe & mill shows up :msp_wink:

Sure, ill be here, this is the best saw related site ever, i say.

...about the saw.....if they share same stroke & rod....i do have good 242xp upper end...but id like to try out the original upper end too, but i hear the porting aint so "hot" in 246, compared to 242....we´ll have to see about that.

I seriously doubt an 8-pin is a good idea on the 246, but nothing wrong with trying it.

Many that has experience with both models have been telling that, so I believe it is true.

My first husky was a 246. The first wood I cut with it was 20" oak and 18" maple. As long as you let the saw cut at its own speed it worked well. In smaller wood, it was really enjoyable to use. This saw caused me eventually to buy my 346.

According to my IPL, these originaly had the cheaper clutchdrum with fixed chain sprocket, but this has one from 242, with option to change the sprocket, and in mine, the sprocket is nearly new-like 8 teeth one. I already have a gutted muffler with 14mm outlet pipe. The piston is almost gone...maybe ill replace it if changing only the piston ring wont work. The jug is open port, not made by Mahle either, in case youre interested.

Yep, it sure is Gilardoni, and the piston is original as well. I have one new OEM piston to use, but now when i was trying how the cylinder would play along, without gasket, i realise that i have to machine just a tiny shallow ring away, from the sides of piston top...like pop-up piston ?

The piston, as stock, hits the culinder roof, but it can just felt slightly, as the piston still turns, but i think ill take off some 0.15mm. SO maybe i still gain a slightly higher compression. I widened and cleaned the both ports, just 1.5 millimeters per side, too. Bt other than the higher comp, slightly better (?) ports and guted muffler this is stock.

oh by the way, the 8 sprocket is pretty decent in the use ill be taking , this saw to, as it will be for notching logs while making log cabin, and for taking off the branches off the trunks, and higher chain speed is what i like to have in that kind of work where torque aint THE thing. Ive never had any issues with #8 in 242 either, so why would t be any issue in 246...we´ll have to test it out, fellas.

In the next post i hope ill be offering a Youtube flick :rolleyes2:

It won't be an issue, just try both and see what works best.
