So last week i was running one of my favorite toys, my 2006 husky 338xpt.. it was running a little funny so i replaced primer and primer lines. Still pooping out in the throttle so i tore it down for a pressure test. Turns out, flywheel side crank seal had pretty impressive leak! I cant be 100% sure, but decomp valve looked like it could be also. Luckily, i didnt run it long enough to do much harm..

So id like everyone's input! Being one of my favorites, shes definitely in for a full rebuild. This saw was pretty close to stock, but ripped for a lil top handle! Only mods I did were opened the original muffler considerably, advanced timing at the flywheel a tad, and just recently pulled them stinkin carb limiters out!

I dont feel like the saw needs much improvement, but im quite curious as to whether anyone here has had good luck porting these saws or with any other mods worth trying.. also, any design qwerks or things i should know before this rebuild? Ill admit, the auto decompression valve had me confused for a minute. I have decomp plugs and would also like to hear from anyone whose omitted the decomp on their 334, 335, 338 assuming they have the same setup.

This will be my first husky top handle rebuild so any knowledge would be appreciated!

That crimped on fitting for the oil line leaked on mine after putting it back together. I think i should have used a new crimp fitting. Definitely plug that auto decompression. Then cap the lower fitting.

I wondered about that also. I removed the oil pickup and still have the oil line attached to crankcase. Im thinking ill try to leave the oil line intact so i dont have to mess with that crimped fitting. I did find a plug for the 1/8in decomp inlet on ereplacment and the decomp plugs i have laying around fit the cylinder as well..
