I am new to the board but have read many of post which inspired me to buy my 353. I have used it just a couple of times which works excellent, My question is where the top of the muffler is a short distance from the top shroud airfilter cover is it normal to see a slight burnt plastic there already?There is some type of heat tape but it is where the tape ends, should i buy some protective tape and add to what is there? What do you guys do? Thanks in advance

I've got a 372 that has plastic pretty close the muffler, but it has never melted.

I encounter that problem myself on almost all saws, my solution, is to simply trim off about 1/2" of the plastic, so that it doesnt melt.

thanks for the input, I am going to try to add some heat shield tape and if that doesn't prevent it i will let it be.

I had the same thing happen on my 353 which is about a year old. I had some trouble with the saw running lean and had the cut off the stop on the H jet and richen it up some. Plug looks much better and the saw is now 4 cycling. I wonder if when the saw was running to lean, the plastic above the muffler melted. :confused:

74fencr,

Welcome to the site!

I would add some heat tape, and not lose nuch sleep over the plastic. However...

I would also perform, or have someone do for you if you are not sure, a carb adjustment to see that it is set properly.

I have had a 353 for some time, and occationally it has been run long and pretty hard. No plastic has been melting.
The differences that I know of between my European 353 and the US ones is the carb and the muffler.

Two possibilities come to mind;

(1)The saw can be running lean, as already mentioned.

(2)If it has a catalytic converter, get rid of it (the converter that is, not the saw)!

If the saw has a green fuel cap, then it has the cat muffler on it. If you decide to replace it, I'd recomend the EU or "tube" muffler. Instead of the top exhaust port, it has the round exhaust tube coming out of the right front of the muffler. (Is this what you have on yours Troll?) This will eliminate any burning of the top cover, plus it will flow much better.

I started another thread a couple of weeks ago, "Husky EU mufflers", that lists the part numbers. I just received one for a 346/353, so they are in stock. They are also available for the 372.

After I put on the EU muffler, just richen up the saw a bit more? Is that all that has to be done?

Thanks,
Mark

Could you give me the link to the site where I can purchase an EU muffler?

Mark;

You can get one from any Husky Dealer. The part number is 503862703. The retail is 34.90.

Do they make these "better" mufflers for other models, or just the 353??? :confused:

Thanks, will give my local dealer a call tomorrow!!!! Love the saw, just had some trouble with it running lean. I am mixing my fuel to Husky specs. Had to cut of the tabs on the limiter cap (H) and richen it up some.

I am not 100% sure, but I think they do.
Take a look at the relevant IPL's on one of Huskys European websites if you want to find out.

In spite of the different mufflers, and at least in some cases carbs also, the rated power output remains the same.
