Hey all of you Husky gurus out there:

I am a Stihl man myself, but I rescued an old Husky 65 from my Brothers woodpile. It wasn't running when I got it but the piston and cylinder look to be in good shape and it has plenty of compression. I replaced the rotted out fuel line, cleaned the carb (wasn't very dirty) and put in a new spark plug and it ran great.

After using the saw for a few hours, it started to stall out and become very hard to start. I can now only start it with the choke partially out. Once it starts it will usually stall but I can sometimes keep it running by blipping the throttle as it starts to die. The fuel and air filters are clean. I replaced the spark plug and it ran OK for a while but then started to stall again.

I'm thinking there is some crap in the carb somewhere, maybe a piece of the old fuel line. Seems to run better when it's cold but that may be just a coincidence.

Any suggestions for me?

Thanks,

Skooks.

Try readjusting the carb. It may have swallowed a piece of dirt or it may have cleared a piece, something that has changed the mixture. In other words will its symptoms change with carb adjustments. Check rubber boot between carb and cylinder too.

I advise you to rebuild the carb, I think the symptoms you described may be due to old gas in the inlet needle that has stayed there and become a gum like substance preventing the carb from having the proper fuel mixture. I may be right here, give it a try and let us know how it went.

The carb. is probably OK. The problem is most likely a vapor lock (vacuum). The tank cap is unvented on that model. It vents through a separate vent in the top of the tank. There is a check valve in a piece of rubber (about an inch long). Remove the check ball in it and your problem is solved. Another cure is to replace the gas tank top with an oil tank top, which is vented.
