Husqvarna 281xp tillotson carb. Missing a check valve ?

Nothing in the hole. May have had a blob of brass screen originally but can't tell what it was.

looks like the main nozzle is missing? When in doubt follow the fuel flow!

If so, no wonder it runs so bad! It will not idle and bogs down under WOT. That would make complete sense that it wouldn't run without the main jet.
 
So did these older carbs use a screen as BOTH the check valve and main nozzle for fuel delivery?
Yes. Some Tillotson carbs used a nozzle with check valve, others used just the screen. If I remember correctly the screen type are “capillary” in which the fuel would wet the screen and act as a check valve, preventing fuel from being drawn through at idle. I’d have to double check on that though. Been a while since I looked at the documentation.
