Congratulations. Don't forget we will need before and after pictures!:rockn:

I'm a newbie, and the folks here convinced me to go with a 359. Very happy. From my searches I understand a 357xp piston and cylinder will bolt on and it's a popular mod? May want to check that out. Also, if yours has the EPA muffler, get a non-cat muffler. Mine never even ran with the cat muffler :D

It will bolt on, but I don't think it is a good idea, unless you plan to send the saw to a reputable saw-builder for further mods. The stock 357xp engine is meant to run with the "full circle" crank, and less crankcase volume than the 359 crank will give you.

I could be wrong, though......

A 357 cylinder and piston on a 359 makes a good running saw, stock or modified. The full circle crank idea was basically for velocity and stability, but having less crankcase volume hurts the performance of the 357 greatly and they're a dog when fully stock. A properly modified 359 will win hands down and a modified 357 top end on a 359 chassis is close behind.

Thanks for setting it streight!...;) :D

I'm not sure if I'm reading this right, you're saying a 359 with a modded 357 top end, doesn't perform as well as a modded 359. I would think that the 357 cyl. would have more potential, I have never seen the ports on a 357, but have run both a stock & modded 359 & a stock 357.

Hi Gang. Here are some pic's of the 359 scored piston and ring, the cylinder was marked-up also but i cleaned it up and am awaiting the piston (new) from a guy. Somebody asked for pics so here are a few.

I thought the same thing initially. The 357 cylinder is basically identical to the 372 in design. But after building a modified version of both (359 with a 357 top end and regular 359) I can safely say that when done right, a modded 359 still outcuts a modded 359 w/357 piston and cylinder. I think there's several reasons for this but the first being that the extra 3cc displacement is a factor, and the port timing on the 359 cylinder is low so when brought up to similar levels as the 357 cylinder the 359 really starts picking it up. Several builders have run identical comparisons and come up with the same results.
