Husqvarna experts please chime. At the very least I need piston/ring. Will the 55 top end(cylinder, etc) bolt on this saw? If not do some of the 342 series use the same piston or do I have to order new factory parts to rebuild this saw?

you can change it to a 36/136 thats about it..

The 42 is a pro style split case saw. They had the 42 special out around the same time as the 242 I believe. I've been trying to find one for 3 years and no luck. I'd love to have a 242 in my collection.ST If I'm getting something confused please correct me.

Nothing to correct, but I am no expert on that saw family (133-family, really).

As far as I know, the 133se, 234se, 238se, 242 and 242xp had closed port top ends, while the 42, 42 Special and 246 had open port ones.
Also there were several differences between early and later 242xp saws. Again I am no expert, but I believe the starter cover and the power output were among the differences, and it happened some time in 1993....

The above is to the best of my knowledge, for the third time I repeat that I am no expert on that saw "family", just picked up some info here and there! :givebeer:

To answer the OP question: Meteor makes a fine AM replacement piston for the 42 comes with excellent Caber rings around $40.00. No need for OEM parts for your 42. I have a couple of good used cyls. PM if needed.

thanks for the response guys, I haven't been here in years. Yes the saw is a 42 special, one ring on the piston.

If you intend to replace the piston on your 42 Special, with a 242 piston, I can tell you that it did not work for me. I acquired a 42 Special that appeared to have been straight gassed. Piston and cylinder were scored, but I was able to clean up the cylinder with acid. Except for Husqvarna OEM, I was never able to find a 42 Special piston, so I purchased a Meteor piston that was spec'd for a 242. Once installed, I was never able to get adequate compression. End gap on ring was way over. I did not have the tools to measure the cylinder, or piston so I can't really tell you if the cylinder was beyond salvaging, or the replacement piston was under size. I was never able to find a used cylinder/piston. If you want to spend the money, Husqvarna, still has OEM parts, and Tecomec has a 242 piston/cylinder kit. I eventually sold the saw for parts.

You're thinking of the 142...

Afaik, the 42sp is in the 242/246/238 family and the cylinders will interchange between them.
242 meteor piston fit a 42 special cylinder? That’s what I ordered so I hope. The look almost identical IMG_1477.jpeg
