i know that this is probablly going to get things going but i was just wondering which brand people prefer or which is better. i have been using mcculloch saws for awhile but i just purchased a used husky model 55 for $175 in like new condition and i will never use the old mccullochs again. i have never owned a newer saw before and am amazed of the performance of the husqvqrna and was wondering if stihl produces the same quality as husqvarna

This is like asking whether blondes are better than redheads. I used to think there were only 2 brands of "real" saws, Stihl and Husqvarna. There are in fact many more, Dolmar, Jonsered, Efco, Shindaiwa, Solo, and a few more I missed. If you are happy with your Husky, more poawer to you , you will probably be a fan for life. My first saw was a Stihl so I stuck with them, I have also have a Dolmar and think it's very good.

ya i know that this would stur things up i was just curious because i was thinking about getting a stihl too. my point is that i used mccullochs and thought that they were good until i got the husky and in fact i put all my mccullochs up for sale and if nobody buys them i will most likely use them for boat anchors or something because i will never use them again, well maybe i will use the pro mac 610 it isn't to bad. and as far as using a husky forlife that is probablly true too but i would like to try out a stihl too since both stihl and husqvarna seem to be the top saws:cool:

I will buy the mccullochs from you . My second choice for good saws would have to be husky.e mail me if you still have the mccullochs.:alien:

I'd agree that all the better quality modern chainsaws (listed above) have reached a level of performance and reliablity vs. price and weight that is pretty amazing. They have given me a new respect for 2-stroke engines which I used to view with great suspicion. Now I'm a fan (but watch out for those air leaks!)

i'm not trying to play the ford vs chevy game here because we all know that dodge rules! lol, no and i'm not stuck in the 70's i'm only 29 years old i just grew up around mcculloch saws because thats all that my dad would buy so i followed, i know that there are lots of good saws out there but it seems like the 2 big sellers are husky and stihl, i would like to get a bigger saw than my 55 but unsure what to buy, i have been looking on ebay and other websited to get famailer with the new saws, models, engine size, etc..... i want a larger saw like a 90-125cc area , maybe a husky 394xp or a sthil 066 not sure but whatever better deal comes around will decide the winner.

hey rooster71 i still have the mcculloch saws in fact i just posted them on this website today, it's in the used equipment section, check it out and let me know if you are interested.

well we all been there done that.. just remember to take enuff time to enjoy the trip.. personally.. unless u got money to do anything u want to with..that size saw is for those that need it to make a living.. like a dozer or somethin.. but different strokes.. have fun .. and try not to let that thing killu. :) :)
im gonna edit this .. caue i think u oughta try one of the pro saws in the 036. 357xp,and several others ..jmo

When looking at Stihl or Husky saws spend the money on a pro grade saw so with Stihls its the even numbers are pro saw Husky any saw with XP is their pro line up.

Your best bet is go to a saw shop that sells Stihl or Husky to see what fits you the best don't buy a saw from a online store because you may buy a saw that doesn't fit your needs.

You really need togo to a store and physically pick up the saws some places even have demo saws with a test log you can try the saw out on.

I don't know how anybody could use Mulcoloch saws its just as bas as owning a Poulan any of those saws you buy from big box stores stay away from.

What you want is to buy a saw from a dealer in your area that knows your saw and knows who you are. Like for me when I needed parts etc for my Stihls the shop I was dealing with knew what saw I had etc. When I needed chain I told the shop manager I needed a chain for my 046 he went and got it he already knows it runs a 28" bar. It was the same when I needed a chain for my MS260 that runs a 20" bar.

The guy I was buying my Stihl stuff sold the shop and retired I used to buy stuff from him because he was the only Stihl dealer. The local rental shop became a Stihl dealer they only sold Huskys originally.

I prefer Stihl myself just because I have been using Stihl equipment for along time same with the logging contractors and fallers. This community only had a Stihl dealer for a long time then Stihl pulled the dealership when the rental shop changed hands. Stihl felt that this area of 30,000 didn't need 2 Stihl dealers so Husky moved into the rental shop it went over just as good a lead brick floats.

The logging contractors were definatly pizzed they didn't want to travel the 80km round trip to the Stihl dealer so after lots of letters from the rental shop Stihl come back. I think the first year Stihl moved back the rental shop sold 10,000 dollars worth of Stihl saws in 1 year.

Enough rambling :D I hope you make the right choice for your needs once you gone with a Stihl or Husky you would wonder why you owned a no name brand saw.

i will totally agree with pacific.. on factor tho is theres people here that can in my opinion take as good care of u as a local dealer..plus some that can do un believable things to u saws performance..this stuff of course u need to talk about,, only after the kids gone to bed:D plug here dan henry .. look im up..
if and when,, u think u ready for it

true, i have a husky dealer only about 10 miles away and i really don't even know if there is a stihl dealer in my area but if there is i'll check them out but since i already have a husky and the dealer is so close my next larger saw will probablly be a a husky.
any suggestions on a larger saw? i have a 55 now and want something bigger for the big stuff.

I think the first year Stihl moved back the rental shop sold 10,000 dollars worth of Stihl saws in 1 year.
What`d the rental shop guy do, take off the other 11 months that year?

I think our new sniper buddy needs to get some run time on the 55 under his belt and he will be in a better position to know what he wants next time. I strongly support access to a good dealer in this case because 50BMG seems to be new to this whole thing, just the kind of person who can benefit from a GOOD dealer`s help.

BTW, gotta love that 50BMG for long range reach. :D

which is better stihl or husky? than what? normally i would love such an open question but tonite i think i will wait for more intense enthusiast inqueries. marty:cool:

ya those 50bmg's really reach out lol, like i said i'm not to familar with the new chainsaws but i have been using a saw since i was about 12yrs old, i have cut about 3 truck loads of wood with the 55 and i am totally in love with this saw, hell might even trade in the ole lady for another new husky or stihl, lol. when i was using my mccullochs to cut a load a wood it seemed to take forever and the husky seems to cut twice as fast! i couldn't imagine how fast a 394xp husky or stihl 066 would cut

rocky i'm not new to chainsaws, operation, or CHAIN SHARPENING, i'm just new to the newer chainsaws and i sharpen my own chains. so don't try to insult me, all that i was doing was to ask for help on information and which newer saw to purchase from people with knowledge of them.
now if we were talking about old mcculloch chainsaws i'm sure i could make you look like an idiot which it seems like you are trying to do to me. so if you don't like what i post then simply don't read or reply to them right?

ONE SHOT ONE KILL

no, i never claimed to know everything either just wanted information on newer saws, yes i knew that there were better saws than the mccullochs i was currently using it's just that old habits are hard to quit and i also never claimed to have 30 yrs experiance, i'm only 29 but i have been using, working on saws since i was 12 and running mcculloch meant alot of working on them sometimes lol, my point is that i broke down and bought a newer saw and fell in love with it and wanted some info on them nothing more or nothing less i'm sure that you didn't try to offend me and i'm sorry if i offended you it just seems like you go around helping people with their questions in the wrong way so no offense meant or taken :D
