A constant negative attitude toward any and every topic on any forum does not equate to a respective admiration by any "junior" members. I understand the guffaws and inside joking many of the members share, but some some people need to go back to if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. But then some people would disappear altogether!
Just about all the Mac designs have the exhaust coming out the right side. Some point up, but usually had a deflector to point it back to the right.
I like the Mac as collectors, and they are fun to run as well. Parts are readily availbale and don't cost an arm and leg. If you want to make a hot saw, they produced Kart engines as well for many years and those parts are available still. I dont champion their use as the saw of the century, but I don't bash the guys who like the old homelites/jonseys/bradleys or whatever either. JB

Johnny 5,
I've seen a few people stand on newcomers here, but for the most part, I think members are pretty good about sharing information. As far as the inside jokes go, I guess I'm more guilty than most, but I've never tried to be malicious.... Are you really Tony Marks?

OK you've got me chucklin

No you have to read the 10-10 post to know who and what I am refering to. Jokes, making fun of, and bustin chops are all good with me. Just flat out negativity gets on my nerves. No, Tony is from east of me I think. Please don't start mix me up with someone else, I have a hard enough time keeping track of everyone else as it is and who they might be. BTW, Che does not = Gypo actually. She is a girl, and very nice. Cheers, JB

Tony,

John and I were talking on the phone and he told me to go to this thread; that I probably wouldn't understand it. After I read it, I told him that I thought I understood it, but I'd have to slow down and read it carefully a couple of times to see if I'd missed anything because of the subject change and "out of the blue" reference. I can't remember exactly which of your threads I had a similar experience with (not understanding what you were talking about), but I do remember that I had the same recollection after a quick glance.

No, this is nothing against you in regard to negativism or anything else.

It is obvious you are upset with me. But if you intimate that I
am some fruitcake that is afraid of a little noise from some
junk McCulloch, I might bite back. I have no problem with junior
members, or members that turn MVP in a month, posting
countless posts with no real topic, but as everyone knows,
I give everyone a hard time.
You started the quarrel, but do not whine to us about
one of us that might disagree with a post you may have made,
that is a risk everyone here shares, and that is what makes
this forum alive. You must fight when backed into a corner.
Everyone here hates my posts, so join the club.
As far as any personal e-mails you may have received, I know
nothing about that as I have better things to do. But some
people may want to try to defend the "old guard". Join in,
fight back, the water is warm. Che is a nice lady, who I have
never met, but lives only 40 miles from me.

My God, it's been right in front of my eyes all this time and I couldn't see the forest for the trees....

Fish is Che.

u are rite , ill have to plead guilty.
:) hope u can tolerate it as i doubt ill be able to quit rambling,at times. . its somethin im workin on.

Hey Che,
If you'd written all of your posts as either Fish or Che and not both, you'd have 520 posts right now and be an MVP yourself.:dizzy:

Back to McC...

I have a couple, so I guess I have the right to talk about them:
1949 3-25
(2) 1951 3-25
1959 1-40
late "70's 610.
all but the the last were state of the art, at least in their day; compared to what some passed for chainsaws back in the '50's, the 3-25 was a marvel. But McC earned the rep it has now, because of saws like the 610, and because of some silly business decisions. There are many companies that have stumbled, faltered, even failed outright like McC did because they lost touch with their customer base. McC sold tools to workmen ( and women!) As did Homelite, for example, but both sowed the seeds of their demise when they decided to sell stocks to shareholders.

You and I, and many of the others on this board are interested in chain saws. We might still be buying McC saws to support an old friend if they were still alive, even if small, and even remotely competitive. Keeping them alive might be a personal mission to a few thousand woodsmen every year. But it meant nothing at all to the holders of stocks that were underperforming the market...McC eventually couldn't locate any more credit, and gasped its last.

If I offend you by "dis"-ing your McC saws, please forgive...the saws are a handy target for what I think of as the misdeeds of others. I'll bet there are dozens of former McC employees who deride the products for what they became, because of where company management thought they had to go.

Back in the Mid '70's, an aquaintance was deeply involved in drag racing an old Buick special with the 215 V8, just like the motor that makes the predator snarl. At the time, all the magazines were talking about was the small-block chevy and Ford 302/351C, as if nobody could even make anything else run. Some readers complained about the lack of coverage for their favorite ride, but some, like my friend, just got in there and had a good time with his car.

He eventually got into the mid-12's with that car. Car nuts will recognize that as pretty fair performance. He got a few laughs..."my grandma has one", but it died down pretty fast when it was seen what he had done.

Enjoy those old McC's. Take photos and share them with us. I'll bet there isn't a chainsaw guy here that wouldn't enjoy an opportunity to rip through a big log with an SP125 built on the Kart block and treated to a "little massage"!

right on eyolf. well said. i have numerous ''good old macs'', 1-40, 1-41, 1-52, 250, super 250, 300, mac15, and several others, including 2 sp125's. one 125 i have the muffler opened up, more out of necessity than anything. lol, like they really needed it! they have a tubular baffle in them and the end was corroded away, so i simply cut it off 1/4 inch. i have all the ports radiused and polished, and the top of the piston and cylinder polished, reed cage radiused and polished, and carb bore polished. i have many friends with big stihls and huskies who have run both of these sp125 saws, and afterwards all they can say is
''son of a b!#$h''. i also have an opened up 066, and an 088, and it amazes me that these macs, designed more than 30 years ago, will cut right with the new saws, and in some wood will outcut 'em. like i have said before, i wonder if the new saws will live that long.

I have an old gear drive 660 mac that a neighbor gave to me. of course it does not run. Is this saw worth tinkering with? It's got 1/2" pitch chain, and I know that's hard to find, as probably are any other parts.
Thanks,
George

I would say that your old Mac is definitely worth tinkering with, but that is really your decision. Do you like to fool around with mechanical stuff? I do, and even if I eventually come against a brick wall, I had a good time getting there.

Sometimes those old saws were flat worn out, and may never run really well again...but they will run a little, just for fun. Other times those old saws were just put aside because the owner got his hands on a newer, faster, LIGHTER model. That's one of the joys of playing with old chainsaws for me...it isn't hard to find old clunkers that are really gems in disguise!

Thanks for the kind words, JB & Fish!

Yes, I'm real....just too good to be true, I guess.

Che

John 5,
I am sorry if I hurt your feelings. I always post apologies to
Electroluxman, Poulotto, Stihltach, Stillwoman, Jagger, Bobcock,
earolf, all the Tonys, and Che, after every post I make, but I missed yours. I like newcomers, they furnish a lot of fun.
I am just kidding, lighten up a tad.
We all try to have fun here, but I cannot handle loud noises
and just stay in the house and type.:D
I think I just tried my first internet smilie, I feel so cheap.
If it does just appear as .:D, then never mind
