A well-known consulting arborist I know told me the ISA says you can spike euc's if you go up 30 ft before doing so. I told him I doubt it and was going to bet my pay check, but he had such conviction it was true I chickened out.

What he ment was if he cant see it from the ground, and no one who had been in the tree says anything about it who was to know???

Never heard of that. I'm thinking like Wayne says above, if you can't see it from the ground, didn't happen?
From a tree health standpoint, it almost seems the other way around would be better, spike up to 30 ft ( where the bark is thicker ) but I'm pretty sure that's not an ISA thing.

Mos trees if I wanted to spike up I'd want to lower them after getting up to the branches. So if it was 'allowed' why would you?

Australian and British standards for amenity tree pruning says no spikes

I'm sure the guy got it backwards.. As well as being mistaken. I'm sure I could hook the first 30' of a mature elm in these parts with pole gaffs, and never get through the furrows. But it would look like hammered ****.. And as mentioned before.. Why do you even NEED to at this point in the game?
