I hate all the new non vented gas cans and think that I spill more gas with them than I ever did with the old ones. I also don't like having to insert the spout into the fuel reservoir. I think that's a good way to introduce particulates into the tank.

If I had known the change was coming I would have bought a bunch of the old ones.

I should mention as a footnote that it is 4am and I am feverish and can't sleep right. :dizzy:

I hate em too. when I went to get a 5 gallon can thats the only kind I could get, lucky I still have my old style 1 and 2 gallon cans here.

I dont mind them as much. Just dont fill em all the way and they wont spill during transit. Also if you look hard enough you can still get the old metal ones.

gas cans

I hate the new gas cans because the are not wide they are thin and tall they fall over way to easiely in the back of your truck and stuff. I love my little two gallon gas can it is wide and has the spout that is always out it also has a screen in it to to keep the gunk out of the saws. I have looked all over and can not find them even on ebay. I would love to find some of them from back in the day I would buy all I could it is not going to get any better im sure.

I dont really mind the metal gas cans without spouts, I just dislike having to carry a funnel with me everywhere. Oh btw,
www.majorsurplusnsurvival.com carries the metal 5 gallon gas cans and optional spouts for them too. european style cans, the US issue is plactic that looks like crap.

New cans

I just bought a new style 1 gallon can, I heard they were bad, but I couldn't have imagined. It seems like I get twice as much fuel on the ground and the outside of my saws as I do in them. And a couple of times I've pulled down on the spouts safety ring only to be doused in mix myself. Built up pressure I guess?

BTW the plastic military cans are crap...we carried at least 4 in the back of every humvee through the deserts of Iraq and they leak everywhere!

Those Euro cans are awesome. I used a few while visiting Australia, but like you said oldsaw, it does suck carrying around a funnel all the time.

I wrote to CARB and complained about them and never heard a thing back from them. I love the environment and try not to spill gas and oil everywhere but those things are a menace. In California they outlawed the old types of cans about five years before anyone had come up with a replacement.

What happened to the vented ones? Did some politicians decide that it was unlawful to have two holes in a can, just like they got into our bathrooms and make our crappers, showers, and sinks 2.5 gallons?

Non-vented cans seem really stupid, like others have said, more fuel often ends up on the ground (as the funnels also are poorly designed for chainsaws, cutters, and other smaller equipment. Heck, even trying to fill an old Massey Ferguson tractor is a mess.

What were the reasons for introducing these non-vented cans? Environmental? It's a failure then IMHO. Or was it safety reasons? (leaking vents, potentially causing fires)

Safety features do not have to make sense to a logical thinker. If you havent noticed already, you can pass any law if you sell it under the guise of increased safety.

Yeah, I guess so. They are banning rifle-bullets containing lead here, even though solid lead doesn't seem that harmful to the forests. Maybe lakes need protection though, I don't know.
Bad thing for old shotguns, the barrels might not be able to take the harder ammo. Bad thing for the animals too I guess. Ammo-maker Norma and hunters' organisations are lobbying against this legislation, hopefully they'll be successful. I don't like lobbying much, but in this case I want lead. Not in my gas though.

Edit : Right now lead is allowed in hunts in forests, but not over lakes (in Sweden). What I talk about above is a EU directive which might be implemented in a couple of years time, it has not yet passed through parliament. (thanks to Mange for giving me more info)

I don't have a ventless one yet, but had considered buying one. Now, from what you guys are saying, I'm going to try to make due w/the ones that I have. I've gotta couple of leaky cans that need brazed, but plan to hold onto them.

Again, does anyone know WHY there are only ventless ones available now? I need to know so I don't have one of those LEO code enforcement officers decend from a black helicopter, in a Darth Vader, black ninja suit and open up his H&K on me for non-compliance. Where do I live? In a police state.
Good site, check out the articles and the free video clips www.infowars.com

Next they will be trying to ban "rifles" AND "bullets", and probably already have banned some. I agree w/you about the phoney environmental excuses. IMHO its just a camel's nose under the tent.

These "CARB Approved" cans are typical of misguided legislation. They in fact have the direct opposite effect of their intended purpose. Spilling gas is more harmful than releasing some vapor. I made a point of visiting Autozone during a recent vacation to WV, picked up a couple of traditional vented cans and put them up in the shed for future needs. PA is on the list of "CARB Approved" only containers.
