I didn't get the OWB yet but have an idea. Actually it was my wife's idea:)

What if I pour some of those styrofoam packaging peanuts in the trench and surrond my insulated pex in 4" corragated pipe with them and then top it off with the dirt?

I work for a packaging company( mainly corragated boxes) and we have huge bags of those peanuts we sell. The bags are almost the size of a small car.

Just wondering if this would help insulate my underground pipe further?

I would still have my (insulated)pex pipe inside a 4" corragated drain pipe. That should keep it dry.

I was hoping the styrofoam peanuts would insulate the whole pipe better than the backfil dirt.

I dug my trench and lined it with pea stone (about a foot deep to keep water away) and paid special attention to sealing my joints well. So far no problems (7 years).

I wrapped my water lines with insulation and put them in schedule 40 pvc pipe with glued joints. i have a hard time with corrugated pipe because I have seen a couple of people had to replace their lines since a rock rubbed a hole in the side if the pipe. the insulation got wet and all their heat went bye-bye.:chainsaw:

E-bay

There is insulated pex on e-bay for 3-4 dollars per foot. I think you would have a tough time making it that cheap.

for what its worth. when i had my owb installed it was a hard not to swallow when the estimate came in at $1500.00 for the central boiler pex. well i am glad i did. i went to a guys house to check his set up like mine and he made his own insulated pex and it snowed few days before and all the snow was melted where the line was buried. i asked him about it and he says its no big deal...i have to differ with him. he loads his owb 2 to my 1 .don't skimp on the pipe. you will regret it .
