I just came across this image I took a few weeks ago...thought I'd share it.

We have a F-250 with fairly hefty tires, adding up to a pretty TALL truck. There is a truck toolbox behind the cab that opens from each side, which is OK but I still can't see inside it from standing on the ground. To get anything out of the toolbox I'd have to climb into the bed, usually by standing on the tire hub ...climbing over like a monkey....it got OLD fast!

I saw this at TSC last spring and while it was great while out fencing, it was just as useful when out cutting wood. I use the tailgate when I sharpen a chain and it's so nice to just reach across and open a drawer. I also use a screwdriver or scrench to open the gas/oil tops each time I refuel....always where I can find it now.

I did hit it with the bucket when I unloaded something over a fence (forgot it was there) but it didn't do much damage (if any) so it's fairly strong also. A regular sized hammer will not fit though, the claw kept getting caught, but I bought a cheap ball-peen (sp?) and that's worked fine.

I haven't seen this myself, and its obviously way out of my league, but someone was telling me that the new Hummer H2 pickups have a door built into the side of the bed just behind the cab, as an option, that opens into a tool box. That seems like a good idea if you're set on needing a tool box.

that one you're showing looks good, but what happens when you get up around the tire well? How deep is it?

I think that JC Whiteny offers some that are similar to that, except that they have an extension running over the wheel well, to give you room to store larger/longer things.

Looks like a small hang on box for a regular shop tool box that has had the diamond plating applied for some bang around protection.

It's not very deep (long)...about 22-23" I think. If you look at the bottom right of the box carefully, you can see the back/bottom corner. If it would extend to the tirewell...it might be good, but I guess this is just the generic version. As it is, it has a double runner (one that slides into the other) that holds each drawer up so they can be extended their full length...you have access to whatever you put in there.

I wouldn't pretend that this could possibly replace a full sized toolbox....but for smaller, frequently used tools it's been great. This was one of those type of purchases that was a bit of a luxury...but I was beginning to really HATE this truck and was quite vocal about it, so it didn't take much convincing at home. ;)

I bet it will hold your scrench for the saw, some files, gloves, hammer for fence (you already said).

It suits its purpose.

Looks and sounds good, Che!

Does it infringe on the available floor space for those of us who on occasion find ourselves carrying 4' wide sheet goods?  If it doesn't protrude to the middle further than the wheel well it should be good in that respect.

Maybe some heavy foam lining would be in order in a couple of the drawers to contain less robust stuff and protect it from the jostling like the kids like at the back of the bus.

Good idea Che, and perfect timing since I`m planning on swapping trucks and I wanted a new tool box arrangement. That should work rather nicely under the hard cover I`m planning on using in conjunction with a Knaack box that will fit under it for the larger stuff.

I looked at them at TSC this afternoon and was surprised to find out that the diamond plate version is $207, the plain steel painted black version is $159, although it doesn`t look quite as durable as the diamond plate either. Should be real nice for keeping things organized and near the gate.

Glen, It doesn't go out further into the bed than the tire well does, but of course it does cut out some of the width right there at the tailgate. I'll do a quick one row of firewood when I only have time to cut for a bit....I do find myself being a bit more careful not to slam any large piece onto it, but it hasn't been much trouble. We have a couple wagons, a small cattle trailer, and a couple equipment trailers that are put into use if there's anything large (like gates, or full sheets of plywood, etc.) so I wouldn't know about fitting one in. As far as jostling, there's really nothing in there that would matter.

Rick, I understand. I liked the horizontal filing system on the truck seat myself...but I'm not the only driver. I'd have everything I use all set where I use it and WANT it...the kids and/or hubby will use the truck (they're the 'night crew') and I'll find my good leather gloves laying in the field, a fence tester stuffed down between the seats, etc. NOTHING stays on the dash....too rough here.

Tony, I am a good jerry rigger...but every once in a while a girl needs something new and shiny. :D Mike says I'm getting expensive though.....

Russ, I hope you'll like it. The latch didn't stay shut all the time at first....had to lock it BUT....for whatever reason, it does now. I'd also advise to keep in mind what you want to keep in it....it IS limited on what will fit. I wanted to put the 'clamp on file holder thingee' in there, but its hanging on the rifle rack instead. Works.

I used to squeeze in boxes of all sizes anywhere they would fit before. Since I bought this 2003 Dodge quad cab, I was able to remove one large toolbox from in the bed. I'd imagine that by 2005, all the trucks will be loaded with all kinds of storage features.
