I have a MS310 that I want to modify for speed cutting. So far I have removed all the baffling in the muffler and portmatched the muffler, gasket, and the exhaust port. I also adjusted the carbeurator as well. What else can I do to make my saw cut faster. What is the best chain for this and where can I get it. Thanks

If you've already done the muffler, the next obvious step is to upgrade to something with a design more conducive to modifications. The 310 is somewhat limited in how far it can be modded before it is out of potential. The one piece crankcase half/cylinder, and the port design are the main issues here.

As to chain, a good chisel chain, like Stihl RS, is the best choice for fast cutting, preferably square ground or filed. This is significantly more difficult and less common though, than round filed/ground chisel chain.

Can I put a bigger carb on it and do any porting ot anything like that. Does anyone sell a tuned pipe for them. I just want to get all I can out of this saw for now. Im getting a 440 or a 660 next fall.

By the way I have not got the chance to get it into any wood since I did the muffler. How big will the difference be.

Then wait and mess with those saws. The money you put into having a 310 ported would be better spent towards buying a stock 440 or 660. I owned a 310 at one time. Heavily modifying a 310 is like turbo charging a Ford Escort. Yeah, you can do it, but it's got inherent limitations, and wouldn't you rather have a stock Mustang? Do you want to spend $250 to modify a $400 saw that isn't going to respond that well anyway?

This series of saw does respond well to muffler mods. You'll get most of your gains here. I'd mod the muffler and call it good. JMO.

I gutted the muffler and it now has 4 5/8" holes for exhaust to exit from. Is that enough or does it need more. I am thinking about porting it, but I will do that myself. For now it is just a toy and I am bored, plus the saw is already laying around.

The problem is that you can't remove the cylinder from the case. On Pro saws, the case halves meet vertically and then the cylinder bolts on top of the case. On the 290-310-390, the cylinder is made as part of the upper case half which splits horizontally with the bottom half. If you raise the exhaust port on this cylinder you will loose compression, as with any saw. However, with the Pro saws having a seperate cylinder, you can machine the base in order to make the piston to cylinder head clearance (known as squish), less and get back or add to the original compression. Hope that helps.

I had a 039. It responded very well to opening the muffler up. Just make sure to have the carb retuned or you'll be running lean. I wouldn't open it up any more thanyou already have.

I'd just do the muffler... and for all the reasons already given, buy something else to play with. An MS360 or 036 would give you great pleasure...

Best way to get more out of your 310 is to put a 039 P&C on it... but an 036/044 is a better choice.

4 x 5/8" holes sounds excessive, and loud. Try blocking them of one at a time and do some timed cuts. You may be surprised...

Good sound advice here,,,,, for that saw.... I would think the 4 Holes is excessive :deadhorse:

I will try that with the muffler. its not too loud. Nothing like the deere 300cs that my buddy and I played with last winter. For an exhaust it has a 1 1/4 inch pipe welded on to the muffler flange. Its very loud. It seems to work well though.
