I'm happy with my new to me 460s, 660s, etc, Groundi not so much...

Well, we're on a road trip and I stopped by a logger's place in Clarksville, TN. He had a few saws for sale. I bought them all. Six of them. One was a Stihl MS310 PHO, I think there was one MS650, a couple of blown up 660's and a couple of 460s. Maybe, I'd have to look and they're wrapped in plastic in the back of the car. Same plastic she'll wrap my body in if I look at CL anymore during this trip.

Most of them have issues of one sort or another. ie, one has a broken case where the inner bucking spike attaches but seems ok other than that (cracked air filter housing but still functional)
One is missing a few pieces, some have bars, most not, got a couple of abandoned bars (need tips, etc)

Anyway, I spent about 90 minutes sorting through stuff and looking at pistons, etc and when I started pulling the pile out of the garage I got "that look" from Groundi. You know, the one that doesn't need words to accompany it to let you know her opinion...

Anyway, I'm pretty pleased with my purchase. That makes one of us. My mother in law who is also traveling with us remained neutral. As long as the car doesn't get a fuel smell, I'm OK.

At a motel in Louisville, KY (actually exit 7 in Indiana). Just finished rewrapping all the saws in more plastic bags as they were making fuel smell. (one leaked fuel into its bag) I emptied the tanks all out, poured the gas in my car and double bagged them. Hopefully we can make the next 450 miles fume free. This is where the back of a pick up truck would be nice.

So I'm still on the road and this evening I added to above pile about a dozen old tree service 021 saws. That was worth another of those priceless looks but we fit it all in and it's all good now. I gotta get this car home and unloaded. Not sure where I'm going to put it though. lol.

Here ya go. pics!

These 021s were used by a tree service so they must be pro quality. Not pictured is the crushed Husqvarna 450. Also, part of that rubble is an old 020AV. It might have a good fuel cap or something on it. There must be something useful in there, (I hope...)

Got the saws out of the car and out of their plastic garbage bags. I found a few interesting objects like sprockets from larger Stihls, etc. One of the saws was "locked up" and it turns out the starter rope was wound under the pulley. When I removed the starter and exchanged it, it turned over. A few tweaks and the thing fired up. It runs, idles and oils. If I only had a bar... I still haven't done a count or inventory to see what I have. Had to get some grocery shopping done (mother Hubbard's cupboard around here) and now I need to plant some more of my garden. Maybe in the next few days I'll have a chance to sort through more. The large Stihls from the first purchase haven't even been unwrapped yet.

So the MS660 and MS460 saws are still wrapped in their traveling clothes. That's sad that I haven't had an opportunity to clean them up and sort them out. That time will come but probably not this next week either...

Finally got some free time in the shop and unveiled a 660. This one has an interesting history as he said the saw has very few hours on it. It scored a piston after about a days use and he took it in where the dealer put a new cylinder kit on it. He ran it about another day or so and the same thing happened. The dealer said he was doing something wrong and wouldn't fix it so he took it to a friend who put an aftermarket cylinder kit on it. Now the piston is scored again. (he runs lots of 660's so I don't think it is an operator error, I think the mechanics never "fixed" the problem)
Anyway, this 660 is a really clean model that needs engine work. I'll begin by doing a pressure and vacuum check on it to see if the root cause can be identified.
Set that saw aside and unwrapped another. That one is an MS650. Got er cleaned up and running. Put some dual dogs and a roller catcher on it. Cut some cookies with it. That one will be going down the road soon.
I've still got three saws under wraps. I think I have one more 660 and a couple 460's but not even sure. (I have a bad memory). It was nice to be able to mess with the saws for a while.

Today was the day that I finally took the time to unveil the rest of the saws. I took inventory and this is what I found. MS310, MS660, MS660, MS650, MS460, 046. Most need some work and several are scored but I'm happy with my findings.
