I just picked up a 272xp, Im trying to figure out the year the tab reads 4060278, saw has no decomp, but top cover has a whole for the decomp. Any help would great thanks

Unless it was changed in the 90s, It's 1994, sixth week, 278th produced that week.

You don't need a de-comp at that saw unless you mill with it.

I dont want a decomp, I was providing a description, I heard that at one point they started putting a decomp on the 272s.

Obviously a firm pull on any saw up to 70cc will start it with no problems.
If you mill you might have to start the saw after refueling in the middle of the cut, the saw is horizontal at an impossible starting position so in this case it is beneficial.
