I have been approached via telephone by salesman for the Insurance Claim Pages (yellow pages for claims adjusters/underwriters).

He claimed these books are distributed to insurance underwriters throughout the state plus they have a site at www. claimpages.com. The underwriters supposedly refer to these books when they need a particular type of service such as a tree service or plumber when disaster strikes.

Anyway he was very pushy on the phone wanting 1599.00 to be listed in the book. He promised I would receive so much work as a result that I would need to hire another crew.

Has anyone been listed w/claims pages or the like? What were your results?

Ins agents very good sources for work but only by referral so they know who you are and what you do. An ad in a book tells them only that you have $1599 to gamble hunting for work.
Reeks of desparation

Spend the time and money contacting agents directly, and build your base one person at a time. Many other ways to advertise your work than in a directory.

One winter I had an ad man try to sell me on being part of a "flyer in a bag" gig. My flyer would be included with a slug of others and delivered door to door in a plastic bag. He said that it would work really well for me. Since it was winter, I needed work but didn't have the money to gamble. I offered to pay him his slice out of the first dollars that I recieved from the jobs I would sell from the flyers. That drew him back in. He said that he couldn't do that. I countered with the line that I could be trusted and if the campaign was as productive as he thought, his money is guaranteed.

Needless to say, we politely hung up on each other :)

Why not get a copy of last year's book to see what it looks like. Then talk to your agent and other agents to see if they even use the book.

Around here the YP guys try to sell you on these stupid plastic phone book covers that have all these 1 sq in. ads on them.
I chunk mine in the trash when I get it.

This one comes up every 15 months or so ( would that make it 3 time in the life of the board?)

Two people have said they talked to insurance agents who said they never use the book because the either have a relationship or tell their clients to take multiple bids.

Call a few agencies in your area to see if anyone uses it.

Besides, do you really want to do work for an insurance agency?

They call me regularly, nice thing about having an answering service is I don't have to talk to them or call them back.

Like any advertising medium, the first thing you should ask is "What would I do with it?".

Take those Val-Packs, for example. They go right in the trash, unopened. Along with pretty much anything that winds up on my door or in my mailbox that I didn't ask for.

That joker called me and lured me in by leaving a message on my machine that said "call me if you are interested in doing some insurance work" I should have known better but I thought this guy was going to give me trees to cut down. I called the number realized this is a business, asked them what product they sell and hung up on them. --This is what my yellow page ad does for me.

I got the same call about two months ago, for the same exact thing. When I heard that telemarketer symphony of tetephones and muffled voices in the background it only spells one thing TROUBLE with a capital T.

I don't know if this does any good or not , before you hang up you say TAKE US OFF THE LIST. BY law they are suppose to remove your name from their phone list. Some have replied by saying "OK we will" I honestly doubt it does any good, doesn't hurt to try though.

Since before Christmas seems we have been bombarded with phone solicitors, it has really been bad these last three wks. seems the hottest item to sell has been centered around our phone service.

I'm with Rocky when it comes to telemarketers, no good ever comes out of some one trying to sell you some thing via the phone. I learned my lesson a long time ago. nothing more than swindlers at the other end of the line.

I don't know the URL offhand, but look up the "National Do-Not Call Registry".

FWIW, telemarketers can be kinda fun, sometimes:

Act like you don't speak a work of english. Make up a foreign language NOBODY could translate.

Take the phone into the can and pretend you're taking the biggest dump of you life... the more sound effects the better.

Download a few soundboards. Ones with yelping dogs work best. Make like you're kicking the crap out of your pooch or something.

Act REALLY drunk (or stoned).

Basically, make them so sorry they called they take you off their list without you asking. All the while, have a blast doing it!

If they call and ask for " the owner of the business " I tell them he is out for the day " I'm just the mechanic here so I can't help you ". It's amazing how they swallow that and just hang up.

A few hints form the bbc for dealing with telesales

If they want to loan you money, tell them you just filed for bankruptcy and you could sure use some money.

If they start out with, "How are you today?" say, "I'm so glad you asked, because no one these days seems to care, and I have all these problems; my arthritis is acting up, my eyelashes are sore, my dog just died..."

If they say they're Freg Bloggs from XYZ Company, as them to spell their name. Then ask them to spell the company name. Then ask them where it is located, how long it has been in business, how many people work there, how they got into this line of work, are they married?, kids?, etc. Continue asking them personal questions or questions about their company for as long as necessary.

This works great if you are male: telesales: "Hi, my name is Sue and I'm with XYZ Company..." You: Wait for a second and with a really husky voice ask, "What are you wearing?"

Cry out in surprise, "Se! Is that you? Oh my God! Sue, how have you been?" Hopefully, this will give Sue a few brief moments of terror as she tries to figure out where the hell she could know you from.

Say "No", over and over. Be sure to vary the sound of each one, and keep a rhythmic tempo, even as they are trying to speak. This is most fun if you can do it until they hang up.

If BT calls trying to get you to sign up for the Family and Friends Plan, reply, in as sinister a voice as you can, "I don't have any friends... would you be my friend?"

If the company cleans rugs, respond: "Can you get out blood? Can you get out goat blood? How about human blood?

After the telesales gives their spiel, ask him/her to marry you. When they get all flustered, tell them that you could not just give your credit card number to a complete stranger.

Tell the telesales that you work for the same company, they often can't sell to employees.

Answer the phone. As soon as you realise it is a telesales, set the receiver down, shout or scream, "Oh my God!!!" and then hang up.

Tell the telesales you are busy at the moment and ask him/her if he/she will give you his/her home phone number so you can call him/her back. When the telesales explains that telesales cannot give out their home numbers you say "I guess you don't want anyone bothering you at home, right?" The telesales will agree and you say, "Me, neither!" Hang up.

Ask them to repeat everything they say, several times.

Tell them it is dinner time, but ask if they would please hold. Put them on your speaker phone while you continue to eat at your leisure. Smack your food loudly and continue with your dinner conversation.

Tell the telesales you are on "home incarceration" and ask if they could bring you some beer.

Ask them to fax the information to you, and make up a number.

Tell the telesales, "Okay, I will listen to you. But I should probably tell you, I'm not wearing any clothes."

Insist that the caller is really your mate John, playing a joke. "Come on John, cut it out!"

Tell them you are hard of hearing and that they need to speak up... louder... louder...louder...

Tell them to talk very slowly, because you want to write every word down.

I talked to my insurance agent about this, she's been in the business 20+ years and told me don't waste the money. The books are there, and do get distributed, but mainly get used for firestarter, paperweight, booster seat and the like.

I did call my insurance agent he said he has never heard of the claims pages....interesting.

Anyway, the guy has called me about 10 more times including yesterday and today. I just let him get the machine... This does seem to be a scam for sure. I was sure he told me I was only offered this opportunity one time only.

The response for the ideas regarding answering the phone with telemarketers was hilarious. Good one

:) :) :) :)

Steve,

Sign up to have your number removed from the call lists. My telemarketing calls cut way down. Since my home phone also gets my 800 number we still get sales calls. If the people are nice, I am polite. If they are pushy, I get all their information then inform them I am on both the TExas and national no call list. You should hear the backtracking. The fines are really stiff and though there isn't a guarantee that that company will get hit, nobody wants that for their company. I had one guy threaten me, though. He was pushy and I told him I was on the national no call list. He went into a rant that there was no such thing, used the F word and then told me he would call every hour for the next few days to see if I wanted to buy anything (just because he could). Never heard from him again. I know some people are just trying to make a living like us but the pushy sales guys/gals ..they can eat my shorts! ;) I also can't stand (out of area) numbers. If they don't have a number listed it is either the phone company calling or someone I don't want talk to!

It's about that time again to bring this back TTT

These fuggers have been calling again, told them twice to stop last week and lo and behold another call today. Called the supervisor , no help.
Apparently you can't register a business number for the do not call list:bang:
Tried the State consumer affairs and Federal-no help.

So just hoping nobody here wastes their money with these azzholes.

Try this one, find out some personal information from him.

Say you want to schedule a meeting, get his name, business location, etc. Look him up in an internet persons search list. Access public records on the state website such as arrest records, etc.

Once you complete the search, tell him about himself and what you know about him. He will stop calling.
