Hey you all,
I just received yesterday a 372 I purchased off ebay. I was going to fill it with gas and oil and I noticed it appeared somebody had scratched the serial # off a tag by the oil cap. Can anyone confirm that is where they put the serial# and tell me if it would be anywhere else on the saw also? Soon after I get off here I aim to call the sherrifs department and see what I should do. The seller I bought this from has a flawless 100+ feedbacks with nothing that looks sketchy. Discription said selling for friend and it was their 1st sale in about 15 months. Came from PA so I would guess if it was stolen it probably came from the eastern half of the country.

Yes that is the place. Sometime they had them under the flywheel, not sure if they did on the 372 or not.

It is very decent of you to look into the history of this saw and whether its true owner has been inappropriately dispossessed of it. I'm not sure many other folks would bother...not even sure if I would. Congrats for doing the decent thing!

The challenge is whether there is still any reasonable means of identifying the saw and linking it to the previous owner.

Is there any sort of central place on the 'net where people can report serialized stolen goods that others can cross-check?

It's a frustration with used saws.

Most aren't reported stolen, most people don't record they're serial numbers, and there isn't a central place to check for records of stolen saws (well technically the state police but they rarely have any on record).

Usually if I think a particular saw or seller is suspicous I just offer them such a low price for the saw that they walk away and I have no part of it.

But, because locals call me up sometimes if they have a saw stolen, I've actually been able to put a couple back in the right hands.

Not the same saw, but Stihl puts a second serial number on their saws....

Hmmm.... but you have to split the crankcase, and it's stamped on the inside on the mating surface between the two halves on the clutch side! You would REALLY have to want to get to that number...

I have scratched and marred the serial number on several Husky saws, This isn't because I am a thief or because I am trying to destroy the serial number. It happens with use-the number plate is aluminium which happens to be softer than many rocks , nails, fence wires and screwdrivers(some people just HAVE to use a prybar on oil caps.) Do what you wish but I see no reason to assume that the saw was stolen....and since there isn't a legible serial number you'll never find the original owner if it was stolen. You can waste some law enforcement officer's time and perhaps forfeit the saw only to have it go to a county auction...maybe even get sold on ebay yet again.

i lent mine to a supposed friend and have not recieved it back. for all i know it could be mine. If it has a 28 inch bar and skip chisel chain it could be mine

I'd be looking for that "friend" if I were you 056 Kid, but better not to give hime what he really deserves. to the original poster...its great to see someone care about doing the right thing. I have nothing else constructive to add.

That is not the bar chain combo this saw has. I looked at it with a magnify glass and I can read most of a line of numbers which I think is the serial number. I compared it to a couple other husky and it appears most of what was scratched is the letters that spell HUSQRVANA. It may very well have been accidental although it was fresh and shiny. If you know your saws serial# post it on lost and stolen equipment forum . Hope it comes back.
