When I traded my 360 in for the 460mag should the saw have come with the douple ported muffler because of the Magnum badge, or is it an option.?

What difference will I notice if I shell out the bucks for the DP muffler?

It is neither - it is a replacement part for early 046s. It bolts up nicely to current 460s and makes a good difference. There is an old post floating around that includes measurements of the stock muffler outlet, the old-style stock outlet, and the DP cover. The degree to which the current saws are choked down is astonishing. You NEED to open that muffler up some!

It shouldn't be more than $30 on the 440/460. You can buy them after the fact, and put it on yourself. Richen your carb up accordingly afterword. Don't let him sell you the entire muffler (about $65). You only need the cover. Should be considered standard equipment.

Just did a 460 search and I am definately not getting the most out of the saw, based on member comments in the old posts.

Now on to the muffler mods search.

I asked the original question because I was pretty sure someone stated that the Magnum badge got the purchaser more than a basic saw, just want to have my info straight when conversing.

Thanks.

I have run a 460 with and without stihl DP (same saw). Also tried a DP on my 066 when I bought. I am in the minority in that I don't want the extra volume. MUCH louder. My stock 7900 outpulls DP 460 though. I realize I am odd man out with my preference to skip the extra volume. I prefer to get the performance back through very sharp square ground chains.

When I ordered my saw, MS660, the dual port was an option. (around $80 more) Modded the original for just under $10. Do a search on muffler mods (on this site) to get more information & pics.

$80 more?!? They were trying to eff you. The most I've seen one of those 660 covers go for was $55.

Good point on the DIY. You can get the stock opening much bigger with just a round file and about 15 minutes time.

Well the 'search' button worked pretty good this time.

Taking off the limiters to enrich the high side, and getting the DP muffler sounds like a simple way to get more out of the saw, didn't read any complaints about the aftermod cutting ability, or sound.

The big bore conversion sounds pretty enticing, would that be a good option for improving milling power? Would it have a negative effect on longevity in a CSM application with a 36" bar, versus just the DP?

When I come across oaks they seem to range 30"-50" diameter, solid through, so the saw in it's present condition is not really cutting up to par based on what members have posted, and I have been paying closer attention to my sharpening habits.

A while back I sold a 460 with the BB kit from Baileys. The guy I sold it to says it will pull 36" of full comp with no issues. That was before it was broken in as well.

Ditto, on the Big Bore kit, should pull a 36 in oak no problem, However, you still need a sharp chain... But if you are doing a lot of milling why didnt you get an 066m or MS 660

I went from a 360 to a 460 so I could still cut for half aday and have a saw to mill an occasional log if I wanted.

To date I have only ripped a couple small logs freehand, but am looking at CSM for this year yet, but more questions need to be asked/answered regarding mills and aftermarket bars/ripchains. Should milling get too demanding or starts to pay off, then an 880 would be the ticket, right?

When I upgraded to the 460, the 660 was there and it felt uncomfortably heavy for me, not a very safe situation, and the price difference was out of range. And, the wife was in the car with the keys and $$. :D

Oh yeah, I hardly knew my butt from a hole the ground then too, but this place has helped get me up to speed quite well, and I thank you all for what you provide. I always find help after the fact, cart before the horse.

The old 064's and 066's were available as regular and "magnum". of coarse most of the 066's had the dual port. The 064's got an upgraded HD filter and the dual port, if my memory serves me right.

The 044/440 never came with the DP, but the 046/460 dual port fits it.

difference, about half a horsepower...well with the 30 dollar and some change list price.

Thanks for the info guys, the muffler mod will happen, maybe I'll try it myself before getting the factory part, looks pretty straightforward.
