I say fake. Shouldn't have a shiny muffler and definately not a plastic model plate if 30 years old.

Why do you say that?
Top cover is the first indication, me personally I have also never seen the top trigger safety like that.
Also ask youself, who has a 30 year old 100cc+ beast sitting in there garage and never run it? Come on its like a 69 camaro with a big block sitting in your garage and you say you never drive it :msp_w00t::msp_w00t:

They were installed on later versions. Davek has one like it. Also it is shown in the modern IPLs

likely no, possible YES.

It has a plastic name plate which would age it to after 1996 if it was made in Germany. Before if made in Brazil, I think.

Someone ask for pictures from him.

MS720

Stihl does not make the 070 any more but they do make the MS720. Any time you want to spot a chinese fake just look at the chain because the 070 was only offered with .404 or 1/2 from the factory so if it has 3/8 chain either someone changed it or it is from china as all their saws come with 3/8 now the ms720 might be offered with 3/8 but we are talking the 070. Also check the fuel mix, all the chinese saws I have seen recommend 25:1, the original 070 recommends 20:1. I did all this research here in front of my computer and the info came from Mike Acres site and Stihl .com so please do your homework before dropping $1200 on a brand new 30 year old saw.

I sent an email for more pictures and some descriptions of things, like chain size, serial number and so forth. The picture is to far away to really see stuff.

Jim how can you tell what the fuel/oil mix is from a picture?

Slightly off topic.
I wondered about that. The MS720 was released at the end of 2008. There is no mention of it replacing the 070 in the accompanying service note, it just states it is "based" on the 070. The mexico 2009-2010 catalogue still lists the 070.
I was wondering if it is one of Stihl's marketing ploys i.e. they may still make both, just marketed in different regions. Like the MS780 which was released in 2009 (a detuned version of the MS880).

It looked like he had a manual on the table, might be a good idea to ask him what the manual recommends for mix.

That may be but what we have here is a brand new 30 year old 070, which may be the real deal but I would do my homework before dropping $1200 and make absolutely sure that it was not a Chinese knock off because as we all know they are out there. I was just trying to point out a few things to look for as I know they even copied the factory #'s so you have to look for the little things. When all is said and done if you want a brand new 070 and it was made in China I would rather pay the $200 than $1200 for the same saw.

Had to bust your balls on that..

I asked and we shall see, no way i'm buying it, a good runner from the Chainsawguy can be had for $580, although a never run 070...well you know what i mean

I appreciate that. I would not have said it if it was not an important detail to check out as the Chinese 070's I have seen recommends 25:1 mix.

That saw is not 30 yrs old but may be ok ! the pic just just isn't good enough to see the real details. The plug wire is black on mine and the dog bolts may be incorrect.
070's are still made in Brazil just as 090's still made in Germany.
My NOS 070 was made in 94 in Germany.
A very good point made by HLJIM about the 3/8 chain that is great giveaway.

I'm not trying to bust anyone's balls. Just trying to establish fact for the benefit of others. It was more of a question as to whether homelitejim knew for a fact the 070 was discontinued, as i don't know either way.

That saw cannot be 30 years old unless a heap of the parts have been changed.

Chinese aftermarket cover...matches the fake 070's been a bunch of threads on this before do some searching

How can you tell? The white lettering (instead of black) on the sprocket cover designates later models. As does the plastic clip on name plate. This is a real MS720;

For reference the top covers are not the same as those on the 070.

MS720

Also check the fuel mix, all the chinese saws I have seen recommend 25:1, the original 070 recommends 20:1.

From a genuine 070 manual, about 1984;

The 1970s manuals may have suggested 20:1

I called my local Stihl dealer today to order me a brand new 070 and he told me no. I asked him to humor me and find out if he could get a hold of a MS720 so he called his distributor and the answer was no. So at least here in the Good Ole US of A you can not buy a brand new Stihl 070 or a MS720. Now if I call one of these Chinese distributors I bet I could get a brand new Stihl 070 shipped right out to me for a really good price, a lot less than $1200.

I have a service update dated 20.1996 that says for the 070 the plastic nameplate replaced the aluminium riveted ones after machine number X 33 878 645. Out of interest is your serial after this? (I see yours has a plastic nameplate from another thread)
