I'm not 100% sure of its origin, but wouldn't be suprised if it was china. I've actually had the chance to take a look at one of these tanks first hand. They are actually pretty decent qualitywise, in my opinion. I'm pretty sure Andy aka Lakeside has had a chance to look at one also. I believe he thought the electrical wiring was extremely subpar, but I'll let him chime in on what other thoughts he had about the tank. Since your not able to get new 038 tanks from stihl anymore, I think these are a viable solution to get your 038 back up and going. The price is also reasonable, considering it comes with a lot of hardware: trigger grip, trigger, fuel cap, control rod, fuel line, fuel filter, wiring (which should be replaced), etc.

I paid $100 for a new MS 360 tank from the dealer. Assuming this one's not OEM, why use aftermarket for such a small savings. You're going to have to pay shipping on this one too. Of course, in this case, Stihl doesn't make it any more.

Yes, these are China. Parts from the Chinese knock-off of the 038.
You can buy the Stihl tank still... but at $181 list... The MS380 is a current production saw - just not available in the USA.
I've seen the tank in question -didn't look all that bad. Not sure If I'd trust the fuel hose/filter, and the wire was cotton covered (!), but those are cheap items anyhow.

I was thinking the 038 tank wasn't still available. Can you buy both the MS and the old style tank?

The only tank available in the USA is the "old style caps". In some other countries, you can get the MS style. I suspect Stihl will drop the old tank when inventories wither (if they ever do at $181!) and substitute the MS type.
