Is this tree doomed?

A couple of trees that are new to me have some distressed bark and deep holes in the bottom 10 feet of the trunk. Damage is confined to one side. These are pretty big trees, 70-100 feet high. If you have seen this before, what is the prognosis? Anything I can do to help these trees?

If those trees are close to a structure, i.e. house, I would remove them. There seems to be a significant amount of decay along the trunks.

I agree,they are structually unsound.Heart rot,Root system more than likely comromised.No hope...IMO.Noticed a road in the background which may be a factor for removal.

The holes are probalby from woodpeckers going after insects, maybe carpenter ants. I took down a similar tree recently - the first six feet was hollow. Be careful cutting as there may not be enough wood for a good hinge.
