Is Your 455 Rancher A Hard Starter?

OK, I bought a 455 Rancher brand new a year ago and it has always had a warm starting problem. It always cold starts on the 4-5th pull. Shut it down and let it sit for 5 minutes and you might have to pull it 40 times. What usually happens is it will fire right away, begin to rev and then cut out.

I have about five friends with 455 Ranchers and 2 or 3 of them say they have the same problem. But, a buddy told me the other day that his 455 has 'aways been super easy to start' so it must be possible to fix whatever's going wrong. I did a little cutting with this saw today and I was a little torqued with how hard it is to warm start with the care it receives. I always use fresh, super unleaded and Husqvarna mix oil 50:1. My old 272xp and 281xp always start with one pull and this little 455 is giving me fits.

A buddy's saw does the same thing, Set the saw on the groud hold the throttle wide open and pull, should start right up.If it does have s shop check the carb it ma still be letting a little gas in after the saw is off ,then the fist pull soaks the plug and you have to pull like hell to get it started.Or you may have a weak spark,bad plug,weak coil,etc. good luck!!! or buy a STHIL

I have the same saw and I have no starting problems. The only thing I have done is re-set the high and low needle valves. Pull your cover off, remove the rubber boot that covers the needle valve caps. Gently pull the caps off and open them up a bit, start out small, less than a quarter turn, and then try starting the saw. The real test us to try to buck up a log with the new setting. What you want is a little 4 cycle, if you open the valve too far, the saw will fall on it's face when it is under load. If you tune it right, it should start within 4 pulls. For me, I prime 3 times, and choke it. Pull once, undo the choke, and pull. Fires up every time, even when the saw sits for weeks with older mix in it.

Never had any warm starting problems either. Once it is warmed up, usually one pull, no choke, just the higher idle speed setting. (Set choke, and then turn the choke off).

Promise me you'll stop laughing before you stain you'r pants. BBBut, a guy told me once some time ago that Huskys start better if you leave them on their sides after refueling. Call it karma, but it's worked for me some twenty odd years now. Try it mabe you'll like it. It's by no means scientific, but I must say I've never had trouble starting a warm one.

Hi my 455 rancher is the same if you set the de-comp valve when its warm.
i just set it to fast idle then start it without the de-comp and no more problems.

Mine was the same way. Got tired of it and got the 359. No problems here.

my experience with Husqvarna, full choke 5-6 pulls, when saw fires move lever to fast idle. If you continue to pull with choke on after it fires it will flood. When flooded, place on ground hold throttle wide open and pull over. If saw is not warmed up(run briefly) try starting with lever in fast idle position. I may be out of my mind.

Thats the way it should be i guess,but not some of the 455's. My arm just couldnt take it anymore. And it was even my right arm!

Thanks for the help everyone. If I had found this site a year ago I wouldn't have bought the 455 at all. The price and features were pretty seductive but this starting problem is so aggravating. Maybe I've been spoiled with my xp's but I just think a warm saw should ALWAYS start in 1 or 2 pulls. If you have to lay a saw in its side, and do a series of choke on, choke off, pull the throttle, shake it, talk to it softly, etc.--it seems there is an actual issue with the saw.

It's still under warranty--it there any chance of getting money back on it?

I would think so or at least get it fixed.

Pull the choke to set the fast idle then push it back in and pull. It will fire right up. That is how I start mine with no problems.

Just pull it out and push it back in before turning it over?

That is how you do it. I have found out that this works on both my Huskys, an my Stihls.

Mine ain't hard to start at all... unlike the 359 I used to own, but that saw was just a lemon anyway.

i just bought one from BLowes. starts like a champ hot or cold. no need for the decomp. pulls over easy. cuts nice too with the 3/8 RSC.

Glad I found this site was beginning to think that the problem I was having was just me. Had same issue with the warm start. Today I was going to use it started first pull, hell ya. Then pressed trigger and it fell on its face. Wouldn't start, sometimes I would just pull plug leave it out and come back and it was fine not today!!! Checked spark and made sure it was getting fuel but nothing... they seem to flood then like you said pull till arm falls off and nothing........ I will try the above mentioned and hopefully this will be behind me.
