I don't know, these people are smarter then me. There are a lot of mysterious non-biological tree deaths in Europe that are being investigated. One of the theory's is low level radiation from cell phones is causing tree cells to mutate or grow adnormally much like a cancer in mammals. Sounds way out to me, but these people are investing a lot of time and money to investigate this theory.
If it turned out to have some truth to it, makes you wonder what those cell phones are doing to use? Even if it was true I could see phone company's fighting this tooth and nail.

Why Our Urban Trees are Dying by Andrew Goldsworthy 2011

It is total hogwash. Just ignore it.

There seems to be a growing portion of the population that fears things that are beyond their comprehension, and cellular phones are one of the common targets. Let us be sure to include microwave ovens and power transmission lines, too.

That article is spouting pseudo-science information which is somewhat correct, then goes off into conclusions completely unrelated to the babbling discourse that was contained in the previous paragraphs. In typical fear-mongering style, there are no references cited.

No one ever seems to complain about radio & tv transmission towers, yet they throw way more radio waves into the air than any of the other power sources I mentioned. Why? ...people are used to tv & radio for the last 50 years.

They must be safe, 'cause I grew up with it.

The most common cause of early death in urban trees are more mundane things, like soil compaction. There may be something to the cell phone thing though, I sometimes get the irrational feeling that every time my phone rings, another tree is going to die. I try to tell myself it's not the phone, it's the chainsaws....
