Hey everybody,

Question - I am currently an ISA certified arborist, and I am thinking about getting my ISA utility specialist certification as well. Does anyone know if becoming certified in another category of the ISA counts for any CEU's in regards to maintaining my arborists' certification?

Got an email into the ISA, but no response yet.

Thanks guys!

Just remember, Butterz, that the Utility Specialist Certification doesn't count for much unless you're already doing utility work and your company wants you to get the certification. i got mine, but don't have it, now. By itself, it does not entitle you to work within the ten foot zone. If you do not have the required verifiable hours of line clearance/utilty work, and that means you better be working for a company that keeps flawless records, ISA will not even let you take the test, these days.

I really appreciate the advice man! Yeah...the only reason I would get it would be to have more knowledge of conductors in relation to tree work...the prerequisites make it unrealistic for me at this point.

Got a question for you - What do you think of this program for aerial rescue training (a required prerequisite for getting my ISA climber specialist certification):

I took my training with ISA. I liked it. I don't know about TCIA's course, but since I'm pretty familiar with TCIA, I'm sure it will be a good experience. As far as your CSC, be warned that the climbing practical varies, GREATLY, from location to location. I passed the written test with a 92, and expected the climbing practical to be a snap, because of the ISA video that was sent to me. Problem was, in my location, Austin, the climbing test was set up by the same crew that oversees the climbing competition, each year, down here. The test was a ball breaker. I timed out by thirty seconds and they wouldn't cut me any slack even though I had to come down for a delay because of lightning, and my second start was confused by the timer's call. They also wouldn't give me time updates and ISA later ruled they erred and told me I could retake the climb. I never did, as I didn't want to go through that stuff again.

Thanks for the input man! Sounds like they really stiffed you on that climbing practicum...Do you know if they allow you to use SRT, or is it strict DRT?

It was strict DRT, a few years back, but I don't know what it is, now. It is a timed event, and at my location it was too rushed to go SRT, as the clock started as soon as you made your first throw to set your line.
