I've got two chainsaw backpacks in the making. One is on an ALICE pack frame. This piece of metal came with the frame and I have no idea what it is for or where it goes. Does anybody know what it is?

Looks like a Scandihoovian Candle tote-a-ma-jig to me. You just thread nylon webbing through the oblong holes, cinch them down to secure the candle to the pack frame, and away you go!

Yah. Weeeall, I found out the pack has an online manual. It is a shelf thingie, but I don't know how it stays on. Or if it stays on. It seems rather flimsy but maybe it is only for packing square, cubical items that will stay on? So the Scandihoovian Candle needs to be square. I think I'll go out and tinker a bit more with it.

You betcha..

Talking like someone is who is truely retired :)

lol...I like that and hope to be there myself some day.

Actually, that shelf thing was commonly used in the fire services way back when to secure a 5-gallon Jerry can for Mark 3 fuel...or a five-gallon water can. Of course, this was way back in the days when fire fighters used surplus military gear instead of the high-dollar mountaineering and ice climbing gear they (we) use now.

That shelf goes on the very bottom of the frame, it was used to place a prc-77 radio on on strap on a ammo can. Some people placed their foam sleep mat on it when it was rolled up tight. I've humped those dang Alice packs all over the world when paying Uncle Sugar back for college. I absolutely hate them and never plan on putting on one again. It makes my shoulders hurt even thinking about it. I get nasty thoughts of Honduras about 105 degrees, 99% humidity and 60 lbs loads in the mountains, I hate Alice packs.

Back in the really dark ages, we just lugged those cans up the hill by hand. They were heavy. I just would throw it ahead, climb up, throw it ahead...and try not to have to lug one around on the next burn.
