I finally got the 028WB back together today, heres a break down of the things that got changed out. I wanted a saw to learn on and this one got to be it.

New Cylinder (Mahle) 44mm
Good used Piston and Rings
New Seals (both sides)
New Cylinder Gasket
New Exhaust Gasket
New Spark Plug (Bosch)
Good used AV Mounts
New Impulse line
New Fuel line
Rebuilt the Carb
Good used Intake Boot
New Air Filter
New Fuel Filter
New Rim and Drum
New Bar
New Chain
New Oil/Clutch Cover
Good Used Bar Cover
Good Used Muffler
Good Used Top Cover
New Air Filter Cover
New Pre Filter

She hit on the third pull and started after that off of high idle on the first pull, I have never seen a saw that starts as easy as this 028, My new 036 and used 046 dont start near as easy.

Also I didn't have a ring compressor for putting it back together so I took a piece of duct tape YEP I SAID DUCT TAPE and tore it at about 12" long then folded it over making it about 1" wide (smooth side out so no glue would get on the ring or piston) and 12" long then carefully wrapped it around the top ring making sure it was positioned right then slid the cylinder over the top ring then did the same to the lower ring, I know its red neck fixin but hey it worked. ;)

Ha,duct tape.Who'd a thunk it.See that old hay wire method works pretty good.I'm glad the project worked out for you.We all had to learn at some time and experiance is the best teacher.Further more being a doer is a danged site better than just being a talker.
One of my favorite lines is "if your gonna talk the talk, walk the walk".Good for you,got your fingers greasy, great aint it.Good job. :)

rings

your post made very interesting reading. I am rebuilding a clinton D-65 and I started reassembling it this afternoon and the first thing I did was break a ring. My question is does someone make a ring clamp for small engines especialy chainsaws and the possiblity of aquiring a set of rings. This is my first time on this site, so if I do something wrong please let me know. Thamks Tom

Baileys is a sponsor here and sell the ring compressors.

Thanks for that information on Bailey's. I have there catalog and will check it out. Thanks Tom

Here is a source for piston rings "When all else fails" they can supply them.

Might be helpful for restoring an old saw that no longer has parts support...

Thanks for the post on the site for rings. I will save it in case my other leads do not pan out. I also am in need of parts for a david bradley. Any leads would help. Thanks Tom

My 046 starts on the first pull warm...

Mine will also, but it surprised me when the 028 after having a rebuild like this and being cold hit after the third pull then fired on the next one, once it is warmed up a half pull on it and it fires right up. My 036 is a bit stubborn it takes about 4 or 5 pulls cold but will start on one pull after being warmed up also. I guess my next project if I can afford one will be the 044/440 later on.

Nice pics, but where's the action shots. How much did the parts cost? Was it cost effictive, or was it for the challenge?

As a matter of record, most stock saws have enough champher around the bottom of the cylinder to let the piston and rings to make entry.Anything less is an amatuer re bore job.But ,then again what do I know?

I haven't priced it out, but its more than the saw would ever be worth.

Was it cost effective
NO at least not in this case, like I said it was a saw to learn on.

was it for the challenge?
Yes, I have never gone this far into a 2 cycle engine and wanted to learn, the only thing on this one that I didn't do was split the case.
