Not a bloodgood but definitely a japanese maple. Bloodgood have red leaves all year. That should refine your search
 
Thanks folks - that really helps. Not sure if I've seen a jap maple that big. They could probably sell it for more than my car is worth...
 
+1 On Jap Maple. There are so many cultivars though, you need to have at least some idea of what is sold in your area before taking a guess. Simply telling them it's a Jap Maple may well be enough though. You can tell quite a bit from the leaf shape and size, those are fairly large leaves, and they're not so jagged which rules out many cultivars, plus the size rules out a lot too. A local nursery would give you a pretty quick answer.
