Hey guys my jd440a powershift is stuck in 3rd gear and i have only forward and reverse of 3rd. it look as though the speed control is attached and moving but not shifting from 3rd. any ideas? thanks!:(

Havent fixed it yet, im gonna try to get by till spring  the local old time mechanics and also groundies rec shop say there is a shaft and gear in the top of the tranny that controls the shift speeds. the shaft is softer than the gear, so in time after using 2nd or 3rd mostly, the hard gear wears a spot on the shaft causing it not to shift. i was told you can take the cover of the top and see the parts very easily. to remove and replace the parts require pulling out the tranny. remove the seat and sterring wheel and lift it up and out thru the cage! wow.

so far so good! as long as i have a busted trail and the snow dont get alot deeper. it seems to be ok if i stay away from steep inclines and dont load it too heavy. lol

Growing up a bit north of Bangor , the old timers there had a saying ," load light and go often " ......... I found that I could pull a full half cord out on the sled behind my 440 Panther .. But when I got to the truck there was a bad smell coming from under the cowling .. 1/4 -1/3 cord = no bad smell :) ...... Don,t those 440 have a whole basket full of gears .... I haven,t been on a 440 JD in 35 years , but it seems I remember they had LOTS of forward speeds ?? . How much wood can you yard per turn ?
