I have just received word of a batch of openings for Federal employment for tree climbers and climber/supervisors. The work is with detection and eradication efforts for Asian long horned beetle in New York and Chicago. They are 4 year term appointments. I will try to attach information. Forgive the awkward format...I had to convert the file type to get them to post...if they will  .

Heck, Blaster, give a guy a chance...see the later attachments...it's pretty good, and the benefit package is good, too.

I like the part that says any day you climb anything over 50', you get 25% more pay that day!

NICE!!!

That sounds problematic to me. Whose gonna decide what 50' is? Will you have to carry a tape to make it official? What if you only go 46'? Take a couple a more steps to get the pay? I don't see how that could work in real life, unless their loose in their definition of fifty feet.

It DOES sound nice, though! :)

I wonder how many times a month you have to pee in a bottle?:dizzy:

Different supervisors have different ways of making the call on the 50 feet for hazard pay. On my unit the climber states that they climbed high enough to qualify by virtue of filling out their timesheet showing H pay code for that day. The supervisor accepts that statement. I maybe have enough status that I can make it stick for anyone who climbs around me. No one quibbles with me about it.

Of course, 50 feet is a trifle where I work...it is seldom that I go up a tree that I don't exceed that. Might be handled differently in those eastern hardwood city trees. But I doubt it.

Unless you are holding a CDL or authorized to carry a firearm, you are not subject to random drug tests (yet)...just at the time you apply for the job. I have the firearm authorization, but I have only been tested a few times in the last 10 or 12 years, since they started the testing.

EDIT--I see the application says random testing will occur. That is not a condition of employment that most Federal employees labor under...I wonder what gives? Hazardous work?? Tree climbers are all addictive personalities?? I dunno.

50 ft.

If it ever became an issue, I'd sew a small pouch on my saddle. In there I'd keep a 50 piece of throwline with a small weight on the end. If there was ever a question, I could drop the weight from the highest point I was gonna climb in the tree.

After a while, every one would be super clear about what 50' is.

50 feet

is that 50 feet of tree height or the highest point in the tree a climber has to go to get the job done.

* Incumbent will be paid an environmental differential at the rate of 25% of base pay, for any day where he/she climbs trees to a height that exceeds 50 feet.

just going throught the applications requirments was a doosy.

Though I did find out I'm eligable for a 10 point Vetrans Preferance, FWIW.

Moving down to Chicogoland to work for Uncle Sugar again?

Though it would be $1000/week before taxes. (Do stupidvisors pull daily?)

I'm sorta familiar with the Feds and how they operate.... my guess is when they state a minimum of 50' it's to prevent "supervisors" from climbing crabapples, cherry trees, and alike to get a "bonus".

In some "hoods" ya really got to watch your stuff (including yourself). NEVER CLIMB ALONE (without a cell phone or like)

I've watched a few "crews" do their thing....... good climbers this ain't no cake walk! The climbing is easy enough but the peeps you come accross..... if you have an open mind you should not have a problem (NYC is a melting pot after all).

I don't belive that there is a quota (trees per day/ man). The goal is climb safely, inform the public (when they ask), and keep a sharp eye out for ALB.

? for the interview.... What does a person suppose to do when he/she runs accross hazard trees and branches etc.......?

NYC pruning budgets are tight right now....... be sure to cover yourself (document your concerns)......

If you run into any hazard tree then you don't have to climb it. Inspectors can use binoculars; it's not worth taking the risk for a beetle. It's also safe to say that any day that you climb you will get the hazard/environmental pay. The locations aren't bad to work in except the Brooklyn area, but even that isn't all that bad. Your out their during the daytime with other people. If anyone is really interested or knows anyone that is interested, I can answer any questions you have on it.

Well, then you will have 4 years of extensive climbing experience as well as extensive experience with desease , insect and hazard recognition. You would be very well suited to move into a career as a consulting arborist or a high dollar climber. No one would be able to question your experience or climbing ability.

Then they would say "Oh you had one of those cushy governement jobs!";) :D

I am very tempted though.
