Have a John Deere CS81 saw. Bought it used with very little wear. Started very well, with good power and very comfortable saw to use. I cut the better part of 2 large elm trees with absolutely no problem, I turned the saw sideways to cut the stump of and made it 1/2 way thru and it quit. We determined
that it was wore out with a compression check of 60psi.
Had a professional overhaul the saw with a new jug, piston, and rings. Ran super, then turned it sideways to cut off stump and it locked up again, piston is melted on exhaust side. It exhausts out the front, any help? Tired of overhauls!!

DingDong Toocycle Oil

What do you mean DingDong TooCycle Oil?

Sounds to me like a bad seal caused the saw to suck air and melt the piston.

If I was not using 2-cycle oil it would not run all day doing normal cutting then lock up when cutting out a stump.
What seal would be bad WoodTick007? Thanks for an honest response WoodTick007!!

One or both of the crank seals. This probably should have been checked out when you had it rebuilt. Pull a side cover off and see if you can wiggle the crank at all.

I'd take it back and have your guy do it right.

Hi Sawford

I`m very sorry to hear of your misfortune. I agree with the others who suggested a crank seal although on that saw it might also be the intake boot has a crack and it`s flexing open when you turn the saw sideways in a heavy cut. Of course these are just guesses without the saw here to examine.

You didn`t by any chance buy that saw from Juan Nunez on eBay did you?

Russ

If the saw seized that quickly after a rebuild and the rebuild was done by a dealer, then they're liable for making the repair right. All power equipment shops must have at least a 30-day warranty on parts and labor in a major repair or else they can't get a license to operate as a servicing dealer. Now if your cousin Leroy made the repair, then you're screwed.

seals

Sounds like seals, probably a vacuum leak. I would also wonder if they checked out the fuel system. Sounds to me like it is running on the edge of lean, like so many of today's saws from the factory. Make sure the tear down AND air test it. Needs to be checked out further than slapping on a piston and cylinder.

There are reasons for these things.

The saw was bought from a local JD dealer and the guy had it for 2 years and had NO problems with it. Used it to cut roughly 5 cord of firewood in the 2 years. I bought it and have been pleased. A local guy asked if it happened when sideways up off the ground or only when on ground. The only time it has been sideways has been on the ground because the trees I have cut have been down already. No I did not buy it from Juan Nunez!?!
Why do you ask?
JD saws are now made by EMAK in Florence, Italy
It is 80.? cc Almost 81
Thanks for the info so far! Will make some of these checks and report back!
