I must confess almost total ignorance of the Jonsered line of saws other than occasionally hearing the name. I've never once known anyone here in Alabama who used a Jonsered.

One of you fellows mentioned the 2145 as a good, general, non-professional saw. I looked on their website, and that's one fine looking saw! What do others of you know about Jonsered quality and availability of parts? What's the deal with the "Turbo" moniker they attach to their saws? Thanks.

Jonsered and Husky are sister companies with most models being virtually identical mechanically, with cosmetic and ergonomic changes between the makes. They are every bit as good as the comparable Husqvarna or Stihl saw in size and build quality(ie. homeowner or pro model saws). The Turbo refers to Turbo air filtration, which is where Husky got their Air Injection centrifugal air cleaning after they purchased the Jonsereds company.

I have ran Stihls for the past 10 years, but I am picking up my new Jonny Red 2171 on Monday. Nothing against stihl, my local Amish saw shop just started Jonsereds, and I am going to give them a try.

The Jonsered 2145 (or Husqvarna 345) is a fine saw, my elderly neighbour has one, it's easy to handle and use and have enough power for most tasks. When it comes to quality I reckon it is ok for professional use, but most pros would chose the Jonsered 2147 or Husqvarna 346xp instead, they have slightly more "aggressive" engines. And cost a bit more.
As others have mentioned, Jonsered & Husqvarna are built in the same factory, most parts are the same. All "crucial" parts are the same. This means that service or parts for these saws won't be a problem I reckon.
One reason Electrolux decided to keep both brands, even if the saws are the same, is because of dealers I reckon. In some areas dealers have sold Jonsered for many years, the brand is well known, customers want it.

As for web-sites, I reckon the Jonsered one needs a face-lift... the best looking saw deserves the best looking site :p

Amish saw shop? I thought the amish were against using any combustion engines.

Jonsered and Husqvarna are sister companies, many years ago Jonsered had a better reputation than Husqvarna. Electrolux owns both these companies, obviously there has been in house exchange in technology (i.e.: air clean system on both brands came from Jonsered) I know some models for both brands go down the same assembly line. Mechanically they have interchangeable parts in most models, there are cosmetic difference however and if you put both side by side the Jonsered is a much better looking piece of equipment.

the starter cover is one such difference. another is the clutch cover on certain models.

I was out with my Husky 345 (J-red 2145 is virtually identical mechanically) all afternoon today. It is 4 years old and just keeps cutting. Light, good power and reliable. If I was doing more than the occasional firewood cut and blowdown cleanup, I would probably go to the 55 or 353 but for now, this one is all I need.

That is not entierly true, as this feature first appeared on the Partner P7700 in about 1983/84. Jred first used it on the 2051 Turbo in about 1988, and Husky on the 262xp in 1989/90. :blob2: :blob2:

You should do fine with Jonsered,

but understand that most Jred & Husky saws are close cousins, not identical twins. The parts swapability (I like that word) differs on different models for different years. There are parts differences in what is basically the same model of Jonsered (670, 670 Champ, 670 West Coast, 670 Super??) for example.

There is plenty of information in the old threads here, but I don't recall anyone ever pulling it all together into one neat summary.

Answering one of the original quuestions concerning the "Turbo moniker". The turbo air cleaning is great. I had the pleasure of purchasing a Jonny Red 2051 Turbo in 1991 and have not had to replace an air filter since. Just an occaissional carb tweak ;maybe 3 or 4 since I purchased; and thats it man. They are great saws and my choice every since. This saw has done nothing but improve in performance since I purchased it. The number one killer of saws is wrong fuel mixture and "Dirt". The Turbo Air Filtration spins the larger dirt particles out of the air intake before it gets to the filter and therefore not as much problem with filter (almost no problems) clogging and lack of performance with air mixture at the carb. If you want a general duty saw the 2145 or 2147 are good. Depending on what you looking for the new 2156 is the alround smoker. Small enough for limbing with quick acceleration and high RPM and enough HP to get the larger job done too. A little pricey but probably worth every penny!

Dont forget the 2150 and 2152. I dont know what you mean by "general duty", but these should have slightly wider power-bands than 2145 and 2147.
2147 and 2152 has magnesium crank-cases, and are pro quality saws, equalling Husky 346xp and 353.
2156 equalls Husky 357xp.
