i've gone through a bunch of the previous threads discussing the 2077 2083 2083II and even the ones that refer to the partner 7700 mother saw. i was wondering how its gone for folks ordering pistons and rings for the original 2083 54mm-82.4cc. i did see the part numbers listed in previous threads.

i have taken on a project with a saw that has a stuck ring and some streaks on the piston. i'm looking to get it all apart and go from there. i have not yet removed the jug.

my follow up questions will all be around that air filter.. and tracking down a good ipl.

anyone with a good deal on a clutch cover or suggestions for parts to convert the sprocket can feel free to reply or PM me.

You could hop it up by installing a 54mm piston from the Bailey's big bore kit for the 046/460. Wrist pin is that same and the crown height is the same. I installed an OEM 046 piston in a 2077 once, really made that saw come alive.

any jug removal pointers?

getting ready to take off the jug and deal with the stuck piston ring. having a time removing the bolts. any tips from the seasoned pros?

chemical? heat? not sure if the hex set i got that was long enough can take the abuse.

Just make sure the allen heads are clean and don't have sawdust or grease in them. If you can't get the wrench in far enough you might strip them. I have a set of T-handle allen wrenches that work pretty good. Just torque 'em off.

got some t's myself at the discount tool shop next to the blue seal. noticed some fin damage near one of holes. wondering if someone played with loctite on this puppy. will clean them holes and get cracking again.

worst case is i dish out the big bucks and get a new top end.. hoping to get out of this with a ring and some cleaning.

alright.. i was just babying the allen wrench. i've broken a few before. got the bolts loose and out and am going to watch some south park then see about taking off the jug.

keeping that repair as low cost as possible... maybe i'll have to pass the savings to plant biologist so he can get that much closer to 20 jreds.

i'll be looking for a 2095 and 066/660 or larger to work on next.. PM hot tips

jugs off

got the jug off. gasket is in ok shape. cut on one side but all touching. the compression culprit is the ring as known prior. its stuck in its groove on the muffler side and popping out on the air side. piston is a little scored... jug seems to be in good shape.

will post some pics if i get any more feedback. will be deciding to just do a straight replacement of the piston and ring or if not needed just the ring.

any more thoughts on adding any other types of 54mm pistons or was that just a gag?

any pointers welcome.

The piston idea was meant in good faith, though like I said I only put an OEM 046 piston and rings in a 2077. I know the only difference with the 2083 is 2mm bigger bore diameter so my best guess if you can't find or don't want to spend the money on Jonsered OEM for that saw (in my 2005 price guide that piston is $93.62) is the BB046/460 piston from Bailey's.

What you got to trade for a 660 project?

i probably can come up with something. let me know whats on your favorites list and i'll see what i can do. i'm always running into different saws, tractor parts saw overstock etc... and theres always money..

so with the two rings on that 046 kit.. that shouldn't matter.. as its a 1 ring piston on the 2083

Will the Stihl pistons improve power - and if so why - higher compression?

:ices_rofl: :ices_rofl: :ices_rofl: Can you keep it to under $30? LOL.

the offending piston and jug part 1

heres 5 files.. mostly the jug. remaining piston close ups to be in the next post

From the pictures, the cylinder doesn't look too bad. Should be able to be cleaned up with some acid. I didn't see any major grooves unless they aren't visible in the picture.

I'm aware this is a 15 year old thread but the 046 is a 52mm and the 2083 is a 54mm. Seems like an issue to me

Big bore kit 046 is 54mm JJ mentioned. Still easier to use a 66 piston in 54mm

JJ talked about putting a 46 in a 2077 which is 52mm like 2083II. I found those 2 it's easier to use a 064 piston.

The 54mm 2083 505. Use 66 piston.

OEM 54mm 505 2083 pistons. 1 ring and 2 ring.
