I am looking at a freestanding stove to help heat the house. It will be in the lowel level of a 2200 sqaure foot house. I found a Jotul firelight model 12 that is about ten years old. If anyone has one or any advice that would be great. I am not looking forward to buying propane so am considering putting in a class A chimney and a stove yet this fall. I can get dry wood, and am cutting wood now for next year. I had a federal air tight a few years ago in a different house with the cat and liked the stove. I am not sure of the top loading of the jotul as far as smoke into the room while loading. Thanks for any help. I need to change my signature, I get to go help start up my old 6048 this next week and show the new guy more about my old system.

I should be able to get the jotul for around 800. I like the look of the cast iron stove and thought it they were supposed to be a great stove. Thanks

I would be giving the interior a really close going over. Ten year old cat stove, if not maintained and burned properly may be like a 10 year old used vehicle. You don't want to buy someone elses headache. Especially a cast stove. just sayin................

Good stove, excellent maker. Be sure you check out :
1. Are you willing to fuss (minor )with a catalyst stove ? There's a reason most manufacturers went to non-cat. Learn how TO USE THE CAT.
2. Carefully with a good light check ALL cast plates, in and out for any cracks.
3. The cat is certainly gone for a 10 YO stove. ~ $200. to replace.
4. This a top load opened by a foot lever. Be sure it works perfectly.
5. Inside: there are bricks and cast plates. They can be replaced if cracked.
6. Air and damper control have to be operational.

7. $800. could be a fair price IF the Firelight is in working condition AND porcelain.

Good luck.

Apologies for reviving an oldie. A co worker is willing to give me his
Firelight 12 for $250. He knows it needs a new catalytic converter. I currently have a Lopi Patriot in my basement in Maine and was thinking of upgrading to something bigger. My question is - what purpose does the CC serve? Can I run this stove withou the cc? It is only a backup heating source and I run it on weekend when I am up there every three weeks. Thanks in advance.

Have a look @ an ENGLANDER NC-30. Steel stove, 3.5 cf firebox was selling for 899 @ Home Depot. I think the current year price is 1099. LOTS of stove for the $$$$$$$$ and it is EPA rated. I am really lovin mine so far.
I have the same kind of heating situation as you have sounds like.
The NC30 is a good and popular stove.
I'm running a Drolet HT2000 and love it as well.
