A local tree removal guy called me last week and wanted me to come and check out this 40" log to see if I thought I could use any of it. When I arrived I could see that there wouldn't be much good wood left in the log because it was rotted through the pith and got worse the higher it got. He though it was some kind of oak from the bark and I just wasn't sure what it was exactly. So I took a piece back to the shop with me, put some magnification to the end grain, and after consulting my wood Identification guide, sure enough it was one of the largest Kentucky Coffeetree Logs that I had ever seen in my area. It was taken down in a local park and I had to act fast cause he said it was gonna be firewood soon. I called my buddy and borrowed the 48" mill and headed down there for the afternoon. This is what I was able to salvage. I was able to get three 10 foot long by 34+" wide slabs plus the flitch from the first cut that I'm gonna carve into a sign or something. Here's a couple of pics.
