This hasn't been publicized too much but wanted to let everyone know. Kidde has a major recall on most all of their fire extinguishers. Ones effected were made between 1973 to 2017. The ones with the plastic handles. You can go to their website and plug in your numbers as you don't need a receipt. If it falls into the recall the SEND you a replace in 10 - 15 days. I had 3 and went through the process and it was easy. We all should have them in our vehicles so check to see if you can get a new replacement.

Pass the word around

My understanding is that the plastic handles on some have broken. I figure the odds of that are pretty low, but then again a FE is something that really needs to work if you need it, especially in cold weather in the vehicles.

I have about 8 of them on the recall. All in the green except one which was in the yellow and I didn’t notice it. The one leaked down into the yellow was of course in a series not covered by the recall.
Oh well, I have some new ones coming, and will buy a replacement for the one not covered.

Don’t know if I have to send the old ones back or not. When my kids were young, when the small FE got a few years old, or into the yellow for pressure, I would make a bonfire and have the kids practice blowing off the FE and putting out the fire. Was really good real world practice and they learned a lot.

We just got one via FedEx as part of the recall tonight. It does come with instructions for sending the old extinguisher back, and asks you to reuse the box that the new one came in to do so. We entered two extinguishers on Kidde's website for the recall but have only got one new one sent to us that far, fingers crossed another one will show up in the next few days but I'm not optimistic.

I checked and both of mine were not in the recall. Based on what the instructions said I thought it was but after entering all the info on their site they were ok apparently. I should go buy two new ones as spares I guess.

I just checked ours. First thought it wasn't bad - but turns out it is on the list. Different links for Canadians:

My model/serials weren't on the '.com' info list above but were here. And if you try to go thru the online stuff and see your model but with the wrong color - your color could still be affected. Mine was in the info as red so thought my white one was good, but it affected both colors even though red was the only one spec'd. I ended up calling them when I hit that.
