I have a 98 Asplhund puddle jumper bucket with the kubota pony motor, it runs for a while the when running the booms after a while it starts to run rough, sputter, backfire then stall, and not restart for a while. It seems to be worse when running the booms from the bucket controls compared to the pedestal controls. I put plugs cap wires and a rotor on it and a new alternator, still didn't help, doesn't smoke or burn oil. any ideas what it could be? Thanks, any help is appreciated!

Sounds like the coil is toast. Next time it dies check for spark, I'd bet there is none. Then after it cools, you have spark.
The run cycle will get shorter and shorter, and the time it needs to cool longer, as the coil wears out.

Thanks

Hi, Thanks, I will give that a try, I was suspecting an electrical problem, when I tested the Alt, it wasn't producing power so I replaced it and was hoping, but the coil makes sense

thanks

Thanks, that seemed to work out ok, its up and running, working good!

I had a similar problem checked all the usual suspects Then come to find out when my boom was fully extended it would stall out and start right back up believe it or not it was a broken motor mount well 2 really but the important one had the ground to the fuel pump on it when the truck flexed under load from the boom it would short it out i would replace or relocate the ground for the fuel pump and check the motor mounts

Pony Motor

Hi Guys, Thanks for the info, It has been running great since the coil was replaced, the broken mount makes a lot of sense too, I knew it had to be some kind of electical issue just by the way it was cutting out, we bought a second one a few weeks ago, and had similar issues with the motor. It was during the hurricane that hit, and that was actually a good thing because my shop had no power, so while working by flashlight, i turned off the light in the total darkness, and was able to see multiple locations where the ignition system was arcing and grounding out, they were not huge sparks or anything, and all the wires loooked ok etc, but with several tiny places that it was grounding out I was able to see it and fix them all runs awesome since then.
