The term "lacing" has been used here in Southern Cal for more than 20 years I guess. Usually, the company that advertises lacing, also offer "topping". It is popular to the point that customers ask for it. I don't know how it got started, but think of it as a "class 1 " prune, just as pollarding as a class 4.
I lace my boots and put topping on ice cream.
