[Hey, I am interested in buying a woodstove, and would if possible, like to cut my own
firewood. There is one little problem: LAND. I own no land with forested areas.

Does anyone know about if there exists public logging, or how to find persons who wish to
have trees cut down free of charge on their property?

Wait for a big storm, drive around looking for fallen trees and ask homeowners if you can have the scraps the tree company left. Or check with local parks, ask if you can take the fallen timber. Check with Pepco and ask if you can have the stuff they cut on the right of ways every year. Search craigslist for free wood or offer to take wood for free...

There's a home here I drive by a few times a week. They have a big pile of firewood out in front of their house with a "For Sale" sign on it. That sign has faded over the years and that pile has never changed shape... There's a lot of wood out there, you just have to keep your eyes peeled.

You may want to consider an outdoor wood burner. They are more expensive and cost more to install, but it would allow you to burn all sorts of junk - pine, box elder, pallets, ends and pieces from commercial firewood operations. Oh and you can get sawmill slabs cheap as well. If you offer free dumping you may end up with a lot of junk you don't want to burn in your house. If you are able to pick up a trailer load of wood on short notice, maybe contact some smaller tree services and see if they would ever call you to pickup loads of wood.

Is there no National Forest land in MD? here in Montana you walk into the district NF office and pick up a firewood cutting permit for standing dead. It's $20 for 8 cords. NEEDS to be under 6' lengths to prove you are not logging, and if you get caught felling anything with green on it you get in big trouble.
