This machine was found at a horse farm in Southern Wisconsin . The owner was attempting to use a skid steer to power the splitter. It was the Demise of this unit. Paid the man 300. to take it off his hands.
First the Koehler k181 needed backing plate behind the flywheel , points , condenser , recoil rope and handle , spark plug , muffler and carb. rebuild . The gas tank was rusted out and replaced with a new tank.
The Hydraulic tank was not hooked up and had water and oil in it . Removed the tank and had it boiled out at a radiator shop. Cleaned out rest of the contaminated oil . Installed the tank with all new hardware and hoses. Filled the tank with 5 gallons of new 30 wt motor oil.
The tires shot , cleaned up the rims, primed and painted and installed new valve stems and tires.
The motor fired up and made minor adjustments . I ran the splitter and needed to adjust the hydraulics and put an Oak log in sideways , the machine sheared the 10" log in 2 . With that it needed no adjustment , the 2 speed worked like it should. We split around 15 cords of wood and put it storage.
After a few years in storage , The splitter ran fine with the exception of the 2 stage wasn't functioning and needed to be manually activated. We removed the Hydraulics and cleaned it up. With the age of the machine considered , replacing the seals .
The wear shoes look a lil worn so it was time to tear it down further. Seeing how worn , called Webbs and ordered the wear plate. What arrived wasn't close to what was on the unit so returned it. The shoes are not available so I purchased some Bronze and machined new parts. pics to follow . The splitter is 3 hours away and work is being done by my Brother in law. as work progresses I'll attach follow up and pics.
