One of my friends found a good dumping spot about 2 years ago... just back up to the edge of a pit and go for it, when the piles at the edge got too big he would bring a backhoe over to push it off. We could have dumped there for decades, no problem. Chips, dirt, grindings, rakings... whatever... little bit of brush, you just had to pitch it over the edge. Shortly after my friend found it, one of his friends got access to it as well. That guy could have dumped there for decades as well, no problem. Then another guy started dumping there, and he started filling it up FAST. I would go there to dump chips once in a while, and the entire edge / staging area would be full... no room to dump. A few months ago somebody dumped a pile of brush there, and failed to throw it off the edge. My friend told me not that long ago that the site would not make it through another year because of the one guy putting so much material over there. I had gone over in the winter to cut down 2 trees for the homeowner at no cost, they were in the way anyway. Told him that this one oak tree should come out, and would surely die due to being burried.... no no, let's let it die first. Got a call from the homeowner last night... he wasn't mad at me, but he surely was NOT happy. Come on down, cut down about a half dozen dead trees that were burried. This dump spot is CLOSED. No more dumping. He was telling me as we looked at the trees that he came outside one day and found a strange truck dumping there... they had heard that there was dumping in the neighborhood, saw he piles and helped themselves, and that was the last straw.

My friend and I knew better than to abuse it, some people though I guess in their minds there will always be another place to dump just up the road.

Nothing good lasts forever. Ive seen things like that happen before. Like a guy dumping a truckload of tornoff asphalt shingles right in the middle of the dump. That ruined that for a bunch of good people. Hindsight is 20/20 but you need to police real good in situations like that. Maybe the stuff you pushed in will settle and youll have more room to dump. ;)

We can't get away with that kind of stuff in aus, even on private property. Rubbish has become a huge issue over the last couple years here. Even the city dumps are in big trouble from the EPA. The one near me got told they had to concrete their entire green waste area to stop green waste leaching into other areas.... are they kidding? like, how leaves fall off trees in streets? No, they're not kidding.

Green waste is currently $250/tonne and set to rise again next month by maybe another 20% with the carbon tax starting up. Burning is illegal too. We chip everything, and give it away. Have to dump palms though. Lately it got so expensive I get more requests for cut and leave. Customers throw a bit in their bin each week.

Landfills are pretty much gone. Dumps have become 'waste transfer stations' now. Everything recycled, huge costs for unsorted waste. It really changed the way demolition is done, among other things.

I dont tell no body where I dump especially other tree guys. I usually dont have a problem with chips its the big wood thats hard to get rid of.

i basically bought my own land just to dump on it. dumping was costing me upwards of 500$ per week. so i went out and found an acre of farm land with a bunch of holes on it less than a mile from my shop to start filling in. even with the kind of volume im bringing in its gonna take me 10 year before i need to start looking elsewhere.

Lucky I live Hawaii. we have no soil. My island is all rock so green waste is gold. Free dump and free mulch. When I was in Ohio (just posted this on another forum) we paid 12-18K hell I can't remember waaaaaay to much. Every 3 months for a guy to come and pick up our green waste. 7 yard loader and 2-18 wheelers. In oregon I burn it all on my 5 acres. Not that I have to I just do it to piss the nighbors off. Boy they get pissed. Especially when I burnt 1/2 their cow pasture. Bad thing was I was on a job when it rekindled and I got a call that I burnt the neighbors down......oops

Does the fire department ever give you any heat about spontaneous combustion or fire hazard?

around here there are a couple big mulch yards that take stuff for free and a few that charge like 25 a load the one yard I normally dump at has moved at least a 500,000 yards of mulch so far this year they just started grinding the "brush pile" again , brush and short logs, that pile is at least 2 acres 15' high and will be ground up by mid week.

there are no "private" dump sites anywhere close way to many houses

Around my neck of the woods almost every town has a compost site or some kind of dump site free of charge. I feel lucky every time I hear you guys talking about how hard it is to get rid of your materials.

What about palm?
Jeff

Whatcha' mean bub? Do we dump them for free? Yes. Anything under 4'. Pallets welcome as well.

I got a question for you big jeff. WAY off subject. Why do the chemicals in the palms distroy the alloys in the saws. If I let a saw sit for more the a day after doing a coco palm removal the aluminum looks like it go's through electrolysis. Turns aluminum into mush.

Its 1 thing that echo has over the best. Plastic doesn't oxidize.

Join the club, got a 441 that needed a clutch but when digging in to it, (now a part's saw), needs a crank case. I guess as long as we are aware , huh?

No i had to coordinate with the DEP and have proper drainage to make sure it doesn't leech. when i have straight chips they are sold. chips with no debris in them. if you have a paper mill close by see what they will pay you for them. We get anywhere from 5-700 per semi load.

I'll take a crack at that, though I could be wrong here.... just guessing.

My understanding is that it starts off a little acidic which is bad but not too bad, but if you let it sit then it ferments and turns into a mild acid. Either that or I got it backwards and it's an alkali ;-)

Some saws take it worse than others. Huski's seem to take it worse than stihls. Stihls take it worse on the side covers, and sometimes behind the clutch on the crank case if you don't clean them out. 200T's don't seem to ever suffer. Some guys use petrol as a cleaner, I just blow them out with compressed air and a squirt of simple green with a hose off. I'm guilty of not always doing it straight away. I try to just keep it to the one saw, but it sometimes eds up being 3 or 4 on bigger palms.

Did a medium pheonix today, man I hate those things. I was all over it with a 3' bar for half a day just trying to get it manageable. What a mess.

Carburetor cleaner works best for me. What I was told is that aluminum can be sealed. Its a porous metal and can take in chemicals that end up breaking it down. Carburetors are dipped in sealer and that's why you don't use break cleaner or harsh solvents to clean it. Anyhewwww.

After I air out and carb clean the side case I paint it with white appliance paint.
My 4 year old 361 has a lot of $ and time into it (looks brand new). Its my climbing saw for removals. After a day of cuban palm removals I let it sit a couple of days. The side case aged 3 years over night. It was so weird but I felt guilty for not airing it out ( im a stickler for maintenance ). Poor girl.

I work outa my house, I have a large property with a back lot that I have all my junk parked and a large wood pile for splitting. We only bring back stuff we want to split, all others go to various LEGIT dump sites thru out the area. Was across the street one day talking to the elderly lady when these hackers pull in my drive and start to head to the back, I bolt and head them off. They were going to dump a bunch of wood, weren't going to ask, just figured that it wood be ok! I told them to get lost and never try it again and got their plate #. They were strung out meth heads, couldn't talk right and got all nervous when I started talking about the cops. Some of those guys are pretty bold.
At the dump sites, we always see the local hackers dumping everything, chips, wood, chimneys, retaining wall stones, garbage, etc. These guys are the one who ruin it for everybody, cant play by the rules.
