little walnut

This was a job I went at solo. Besides a few elderly folks who wanted to watch that is. One guy wanted to crank up on the come-a-long and he did and almost made it barber chair on me. The trunk was hollow.

Pic1 is after I limbed it up, you can see the high stub on the right that went over the wire. I could not pull it with that limb on. I used the walnut to the left to set a pulley to keep it from going into the wire. I did assume it might be hollow beforehand as walnuts usually are.

Pic 2 is 180 degrees of pic 1 and pic 3 is the pull rigging. I used one of my many cheap homemade eye- slings made from 3/4 3 strand to hook up to the tree with the winch. I like these eye-slings, they are cheap and disposable and good for stuff like this. Oppossed to useing my good stuff I would rather save the cycles if you know what I mean.

Pic 5 is the shot of the rig I put up on the bigger walnut to the left of the target walnut in pic1. This rig point, with the port-a-wrap- was about 80 feet from the pull rig which means I had to cut a notch, tension pull rope, backcut and let the rope run on the port-a -wrap all within the same time.
This puppy went and did exactly what i wanted and there was a lot of things I had to miss.

tman! look at you posting some pics. good stuff.

how much rope you got in that rubbermaid? not a bad idea at all. neat and clean. not a bad first set of pics at all.

Uhm, did you catch the part where I said I did that job by myself? What does a guy have to do to impress you?:)
The white clothes hamper has 200 feet of 20,000 lbs test and the trash can had 150 of regular bull rope.
And I am using smiley faces too now.

By the way my neighbor posted the pics for me, I just run the saw and my mouth.
Be sure to check out the fork attachment on the dingolator. If you can see the left side of its rear support it says" muscle" on it. That's because I made it out of a weight lifting bench. I did beef it up enough to do the job.
I can just slip the forks out of the receiver and slip something else in real easy. The fork part is made out of Jeep bumper cut in half and welded to some angle iron and square tubing. Very clean and easy to get off the trailer and put to work.
This whole tree took about an hour to put on the ground even with climbing it, rigging it and saying some prayers. Not only was there a hot wire but other trees and shrubs on the ground. I barely made a dent in the ground as when it started to go I just dropped the saw and grabbed the rope on the port-a-wrap and brought it down slow. It was hollow about 8" in the center, the hinge didn't break til it was on the ground.
The pic of the trunk, stump and all did not come out and all the damage I did was knock a few poplar leaves off.

Nice pics Mr. T!

I have some questions. What is the strap doing around the base of the tree with the tubs by it? Is it just holding the tail of that sling?

Is that just a cable hoist doing the pulling? If so, what is the rating?

I have never lowered a whole tree like this, but was wondering, do you secure the butt of the tree to the stump, so while you lower it can't take off if the hinge breaks? Or do you just let it go after it is committed and clear?

What notch is best for this method? I would think and openface to allow the tree to ride the hinge down the farthest, but again, not sure.

Lastly, what is the diameter and strand of that 20,000lb test you got?

I learned something today! Time to experiment.

That strap is holding the pulley line which is holding the bull line. I try not to put my 400 dollar bull rope through crotches. It hurts the rope and the tree.
This rope was place about 1/2 up the trunk to keep it from going into the wire as a failsafe AND to ease the tree to the ground.
That old come-a -long just takes the place of two guys pulling and if it needed I can tie off the pull rope but it is fine for those easy pulls. I wouldn't go cranking like hell on it , EVER!
I sometimes use the open faced notch but I wanted to cut the trunk low to save cuts. Less cuts= less gas. After the tree went the stump was 2 inches high and ready for grinding. I just used a wide notch to allow sufficient space . Look at the log on the Dingolator. Its a wide one angled notch, It it wasn't hollow and I used an open face I would have been able to cut the brush off and the trunk would have risen back off the ground so I could cut it up at waist level. I don't always break the hinge and when dropping trunk I use wide or open notches and slowly bring it down. Less SMASH like that.
I work a notch . take care, talk to you later.

very well done

But where is the treeman in action? Maybe next time. I'm not comfortable around electrical wires. I probably would have climbed up and topped the tree below the wires, then dropped the trunk. When did you discover the trunk was hollow?

I am not usually the one saying this but; What in the F are you talking about? What , are you drunk too?
The old guy was a neighbor of the client who couldn't help not touching my stuff. I started my backcut and saw him cranking like crazy on that little winch and then heard the hinge start to barber chair. I got him off that winch quick!

The Treeman has a new batch of pics coming soon to a website near you. You will see the Treeman soon.
The Treeman always suspects a walnut to have a hole in its core. The treeman bailed the first attempt to put it on the ground and was going to wait until he had enough jobs to do to warrant renting a lift. The Treeman woke up one day and said" F it, I am going to do this... now!"
I did climb it once but got all scared of dropping something on that flimsy wire so I came down and called my mommy. I live to fight another day and didn't even have to call my ins co.

Mommy wow! I'm a treeman now!

Treeman I seldom fell same direction or with the lines but if I do
I will put a snub rope behind it and then a pull rope to start the fall.
I have had hinge wood come loose before and learned how to prevent
downed lines. I normally fell them straight back away from the line though.
