Hi I am new to this forum and I would like to know if any one has ever loaded logs with the system that they use to load with on dirty jobs show .

You roll logs on a set of forks that are mounted on the side of the truck and it throws the logs onto the truck

nope..never done it or seen it done...sounds like too much work. would be easily with a skidder or a knuckleboom

JKS, I saw that episode and to be honest it looked very weird and dangerous, even by logging standards, LOL. It sure wasn't very precise as far as placing the log in a good location for stacking purposes. Of course, considering everthing else about that operation on that show and it was par for the course.

Side loader yes I have used them dangerous bad dangerous!
They were designed for pulp wood, work off brake usually
powered by a pto driven sprocket and cables that wrap fast
to lift arms the one I used at our coop would throw a log
plum over the truck posts and into ?
They also have a bad habit of a link in the chain breaking
which if breaks at the wrong time lets the log back down
fast toward the operator!

I have another variation that is much safer called a cable loader
and it has a boom with snatch blocks hooked up to a fast spooling
winch that works off the sprocket.

thanks for your information I thought of doing this to a trailer, but after reading these post I think i'll do something different.

If you are thinking of making a trailer loader check out
grapple trailers or grapples for you to retrofit to your own! They are not cheap but they are good and safe and more professional !

Are they any good?

I see some around here. They drag the log to the truck with a cable and then lift it up onto the log racks. I believe I've seen the name 'Lincoln'.

They have there place I prefer my grapple but the good thing
on a cable loader mine is a hope loader, is if it is down in a hole
the log can be drag to you and they are fast. The problem with
mine is the truck is wore out it is on! The loader is good but it
had a come along type ratchet lock to suspend the log that is
wore out, no big fix but as the pile gets higher and need better
positioning would come in handy, instead of slipping brake you
would get log in position over target and release and drop in place!
There is a definate learning curve with these and definitely are
not for the timid.

hydrolic

go with a grapple set up , all of the cable cranes and hoists of yester year are now being outlawed do to the safety factors involved.(excavators vrs. steam shovel or small cable crane lifts) its actually more efficent to use hyd.

SAFTEY FIRST.

If he is talking about "side hauling" that practice has been done as long as men have hauled logs out of the woods.

Just simple physics, ramps ,cable, chain, rope and a source of power.Set the ramps up to whatever the haul vehicle is,run the rope, cable or chains under the log and roll it up the ramps, planks, short timbers.

No al he was talking about a side loader I have run one and
will never again way too dangerous!!!!!!!

That was on the mule logging episode. I thought it was neat way of doing it if you couldn't afford a knuckle boom loader.
Boom loaders are not all that safe either, thats why they have a remote control option now.

Really I don't have one on mine and its safe hmm could it be
people are to lazy or fat to climb the ladder

A side loader is a short wood log truck that has arms that
hinge down usually on the driver side not mule wagon or
anything else described. You would have had to use or see
one to understand, but the arms are run off pto and a brake
which when engaged raises the arms fast you can somewhat
control the speed by letting the brake slip a little, but if the log
is heavy a faster speed is necessary to clear the uprights.
If you get too much speed you will clear the passenger side
uprights and the log lands on ? This is the absolute most
dangerous logging ever I have done it and am grateful to
be whole.

I am not saying a grapple is not better than a cable loader but
a cable loader is safe if run proper and I will run mine when I fix
it does that make me an outlaw?

I have seen more than one truck turned over while loading, that is the biggest danger. Also when a hydrualic line blows while loading that boom drops quick and can shake the operator from the seat, Not to mention slippery steps when winter sets in. Sure there are more dangerous aspects of logging, its not one of the top 10 deadliest jobs because its safe. The truck mount auto boom loaders are up there towards the top of the list, probably behind chainsaw and skidder operation.
I have a friend with remotes on his truck and when he upgrades next time I plan on snagging them.
