I have a piece of property that I am looking at logging out . Doing a select cut , not a cut it all operation .
It boarders the potomac river hear in VA and also has a swamp and a small stream that cuts the propery in half.
It is in the chesapeak bay watershead area.

What are the no no's? Or what should I stay away from so I don't get shut down .

my family has been in the excavation business for a long tome -- but things are tight so we might branch out into logging , we have the equipment . Just don't really know the rules . Go figure , the first jub kinda thrown at us has a hitch -- go figure .

Your state should have a forestry department of some kind or some other agency that oversees timber harvesting. Best check with them before you start.

The only advice I can give you is don't, under any circumstances, start a commercial logging operation along the bank of a river until you find out what the laws are. I don't know how things are on your side of the hill but out here there are rules upon rules in regard to logging near rivers. And huge penalties for ignoring the law.

There are loggers from your general area on AS...give them awhile and they'll probably give you more specific advice.

dont make me pull out my 'hire a forester' rant.

but for the love of god hire a forester. its worth it in the long run. and if you are going into logging full bore you can put him to work buying stumpage for you.

We have a saw mill that is only about an hour drive from the site. They will be the ones buying it .
I am going to dig out the number for the forrestry dept in the morning.
